Other "ALTERNATIVES"

Ok, since we've beat the slaughter thread to death........lets talk about alternatives. in a Pro/Anti slaughter thread, they get shoved in the corner.....

This thread is ONLY about alternatives. NOT about if slaughter is good or bad.

I'll start.

There has been talks from the AVMA and AAEP about "euthanasia" stations. Inexpensive places to bring your horses to be put down and disposed of. Though funding hasn't been figured out yet....who to run it, how to dispose, how to PAY for the stations......

My opinion on the pounds (another alternative where horses may end up)....the local POUND will be overran. Here we have a pound that has picked up horses. They then destroy the hrose at Tax payer's expense if they cannot locate the owner or another place to deal with them.

Wichita also has a "POUND" area for horses seized for some reason.

Well I think That a euthansia stations would be good. Is there another way to make a mare infertile then spaying them? I think there are to many back yard horse being bred, and horse should have special requirments to be bred, Even though I wanted to breed my horse, I now relize she isent good enough to be bred and I would have a hard time registering the baby. Maybe all mare not approved for breeding by the goverment are not allowed to be legally bred? I dont know Im tossing around ideas here...

Its sad to put any healthy-ish horse to sleep

If we could Id rather just have designated farms, where the perimeter is fenced and then unwanted horses can be set free to run wild or something.

It probably wouldnt work but something like that Id rather.

jeda...how will they eat? who will feed them?

Who will pay to feed them?

BLM has to round up and keep the herds down to prevent many from starving every year.

I think that's a good idea but couldn't anyone just come and dump their horse there?

The only thing that will really work is EDUCATION. People need to understand that just because they have a mare does not give them the right to breed it. They need to be more aware of how long a horse lives for and to realise that they are responsible for it. It won't be a cute foal for ever. Bit like puppies and kittens.

In the meantime I have to go with euthenasia. There just is not the money to be had to gaurantee all horses a good home. Sad but true. I would rather see a horse put down than left to suffer in some peoples ownership.

Great topic BW!

Rescues and Pounds are the usual alternatives suggested...but then you have the funding problems along with insufficient personnel to enforce the few regulations that are in place.

Some of the prisons do have a horse training program where the prisoners train the horses...maybe that is a direction to consider. Letting the prisoners retrain and even care for some of the homeless horses. But....then we come back to the funding problems.

Speaking for myself, I do not like the idea of having government inspections and approvals. I don't like the idea of having the government telling me that I can or cannot do with a horse that I bought and am paying to support and care for. When it comes to my animals I want to keep the government out of it. I am not willing to give up those personal rights.

I think the main problems any of the possible alternatives face come down to 2 things...Money and the rights of an animal owner.
Speaking for myself I am not willing to put out more of my hard earned money for someone else's unwanted horse.
How do you do anything without taking away the rights of the animal owner?

I know...I just wish people wouldent breed there horses so much..I wouldent like the goverment telling me if I could or could not breed my horse.

Good idea BW for a thread.

Some good ideas so far that I have read.

Horse therapy seems to be so productive and benificial. It would be nice to see some unwanted horses go into that area, exspecially abused and neglected horses. They seem to have a special connection. How it would be funded would be a whole lotta figuring out.
I did a paper in college on animal therapy. Horses have helped abused and neglected children and adults. Also helped on Autism, Down Syndrome, and other conditions.
Ideas on funding?:
Health insurance companies
Schools
????

yes, I knew there would be a reason why they dont have these horse refuge farms

I dont know who would feed them and hadnt thought about it, my bad! It would be nice though, if they could all just live.
