Oster makes the A5. Andis makes AGC and AG. Andis are far superior in their design and construction and are easier to care for.

Thankies!
Length is based solely on the look you want. If you want a 1/8", go with a 7F. I wouldn't go less than a 7F (preferably a 5F for your dog).

I love my Andis for the smaller jobs, like ears face, muzzle, legs, dogs, and cats, but the big jobs like body clipping I really love my vari speed Oster's

touchofdandy; as a groomer I would either go for the Oster clippers or Laube (5 yr guaranty, variable speed more powerful, wears blades faster). I have owned all 3. I have never clipped a goat so I don't know how dense the coat is but I do know that clipping a large double coated dog with a small set of clippers is a formitable task. We use a set of Oster/ Sunbeam sheep shears.

With your Chow cross you will most likely only be able to get under the coat and get the blades to cut the hair with a 10 blade. The problem with that is that the dog will be succeptable to sunburn and bug bites. When I still bred Chows (my youngest puppy is 14) I would clip them in April after it stopped freezing most nights so that they would have started growing coat before sunburn season. I now start with a 3 blade on the Poms and work my way shorter until I find one that will cut, usually a 5 skip. Be very careful with the coarser blades as you can hamstring a dog without hardly trying.

Be sure to clean and oil your blades often, they will last a lot longer.

Laubes may have a 5 yr guarantee, but you'll find yourself sending them in all the time to be repaired. One thing to remember is that Oster's require internal maintenance (grease, oil) and they have annoying air vents that blow hair all over you. A 2 speed or super 2 speed will easily go through a goat's hair w/out worry of nicking their skin like the large animal clippers do.
