Wink Ordering a Haflinger foal

In 2 years I am thiking about ordering a Haflinger foal from my MIL. There are 3 mares she has that are registered and Max, the stud, is also registered. I like the carmel colored mare better than the regular chestnut/flaxen mare, the other mare, not pictured, is also chestnut/flaxen. What do you think?

This mare has a Max filly right now.

This mare is the one I like

And this is the stallion

And him talking to the "other mare" The one in the background is not registered.

Shell, I remeber you sent me Max's pedigree about a year and a half ago.. He's a well bred boy!!! He's more the the 'drafty' side in build then some of the 'fancier' dressage style Haffies, but I like him in his photos!

I am a stickler on proper color in the breed since it is one of their very distinguishing characteristics, so I personally don't care for the sooty mare from a type stand point but in the one photo you show, she looks to have a nicely put together body, but because of her coloring, I'm not certain if she'd pass inspection??? I can't remember how dark they'll allow them to be before they fail them....

I DO, however like the headpiece on the mare in the front that Max is 'talking' to, very type headpiece...

As we've talked about before, one of my dog clients is
Briarcroft Hafflingers , so I've really grown to have a strong appreciation for this smart, hardy, do it all breed!

Thanks Wyld! I would hope to get the darker color with the white mane and tail. I like the heavy draft type much more than the modern Haflingers. As for the possibility of heavy being less athletic, I think the low center of gravity on these guys make them very agile indeed.

They are sooo cooool!!

Oh wow! I hope to be able get a Halflinger some day. I've wanted one for years. Like the Gypsy Vanners . Halflingers are very rare in my area.

Smile

I would go with the one with the longest, highest set neck....since, to me, the stallion's neck looks on the short side.
Just going by the photos......
I prefer the first mare as she looks more feminine...but she does look like one front leg might be off a bit in the photo you posted.
Can't tell all that much about the second mare...color is nice , neck looks well placed but not long enough for me...cute expression, big well-placed eyes and nice shaped ears. Her head is a wedged shaped...she looks like she could be a half arabian...
Go with the one that.....in your opinion.....best fits the breed standard and you think will produce the type of foal/horse you will want to own!.

I agree that the Haffies are pretty cool and they all seem to be pretty darned versatile as well! Roger really thinks he wants one (it is that or a full sized draft horse, the Haffie is more physically manageable, lol) so I've been looking at a gelding that the Gibson's have for sale, if Lexi sells before their gelding, Roger gets a new horse, lol (so really KARYN gets a new horse, lol)...

They are like mini belgians.
Which we might be getting if we finally have the land and facilities.

He is a very nice looking boy. Neighbor has some haflingers. However doesn't seem to do much with them. Has them for sale for cheap of course because he's bred all his mares, had foals, and then bred them again. Not necessarily the route I would of taken. Should of seen if there was a market first. His are the light chestnuts with flaxen manes. I don't particularly care for that color either. Be it in Haflingers or Belgians. I like a darker chestnut. Your MIL stallion is very impressive. Now he I like a lot.
