Orange Pee?

Ok so a wierd question but my horse seems to pee an orange color. I heard that it can happen if you give them too many vit and minerals. I do give them grandvite, a joint supplement and flax with a cup of grain in the am and pm. Do you think this could cause the pee thing? Thanks

Under 'normal' circumstances, it's the body's way of getting rid of excess protein that it can't use. Grand Vite is about 3% Protein per scoop (if I did the made correctly) so depending on your hay's protein content and that of other things you feed, it's very possible it's caused by excess protein.

Continuous excess protein can lead to a world of problems i.e. laminitis/founder. It's not a bad idea to consult your vet, tell your vet how much protein your horse is accumulating per day with supplements, and even have your hay tested -- if you do a HGS search for I think red/orange urine there's a thread -- someone with a horse(s) in Canada were finding reddish spots in the snow, evidently it's "normal" up there.

A lot of horses tend to get orange pee in the winter. I've always been able to clear it out by providing a salt lick, and unlimited amounts of water. Dark pee is also a sign of dehydration.

I'm not QUITE at the border, but close! Yep, we get the orange pee thing here...my current YO said not to worry, it's not uncommon, in her experience, and when there's snow on the ground, it shows up really well, as opposed to if it happens over warmer weather.
