    Oprah's $38,000 bag--really?

    http://www.npr.org/blogs/codeswitch/...38-000-handbag

What do ya'll think about this? She (oprah) seems to think she was not allowed to view the bag because she was black but I feel like the article doesn't so much address that. The store clerk never owns up to it, simply says the bag is too expensive.

My thoughts? The world has gone to HE double hockey sticks. I can't believe that someone would drop 38 grand on a handbag simply because they can. Granted, oprah does a lot for her community but no handbag is worth that kind of dough.

She also raked in over 77 million dollars last year. It begs the question--is it possible to have too much money? Who in their right mind needs that much money? I feel our society can be so out of balance and it disgusts me every time I'm in line at the grocery store and the magazine covers only talk about superficial things (who gained ten pounds this winter, what color eyeshadow will make you look thinner, and the latest celebrity crush) I always think to myself, WHO CARES. As a society, we should give a carp about things that actually matter, like the economy and globalization and education.

I think we can do better. I think we should do better.

That's just my two cents. Thoughts?

I think if she can afford that money and wants to buy a handbag that won't cost her any more then well and good to her. How much do some people pay for a horse that then costs them every day?

The article I read suggested there was a misunderstanding and that the sales person was trying to show her that the handbag came in different colours.

As to how much money she has. She earns it and she does a lot of good with it.

I have better things to worry myself about. I never know who celebrities are because I could care less.

I gave up a long time back thinking we could change any one elses thoughts.

I am planning on using my time for constructive purpose this month and hope to do some fundraising for farming families in drought.

Then may I suggest copying this thread.... sending to Oprah and asking her if she has an older handbag that she is now willing to, autograph, and part with since the procuring of the 'diamond studded' bag ( I assume..lol). Perhaps it would make a good 'raffle' item for your fundraising
.....well, I've tried arguing with a brick before and found it more productive than getting involved in these threads Ambrose

It really should be above any one elses phone number for ease for when you get requests for it from people like me.

BTW, you want to donate to my charity of the month? It really is a good cause.

And who wouldn't sell someone an overpriced handbag?

Luxury shop Trois Pommes denied discriminating against Winfrey, who asked to look at a "Jennifer" purse, designed by Tom Ford and named for actress Jennifer Aniston. The owner put the incident down to a language barrier.
"This is an absolute classic misunderstanding," shop owner Trudie Goetz said.
"This has nothing to do with racism, I am here for everyone and the customer is king."
The sales assistant had wanted to show Winfrey that the bag was also available in other materials, which may have given the TV host the impression the shop did not want to sell it to her, Ms Goetz added.
"Of course that's not the case. Who wouldn't want to sell a purse for 35,000 francs?" Ms Goetz said.

Chester, your attitude is exactly the attitude I WISH most people had. I realize I'm only one person and can't change the entire world view but I can start with myself and hopefully setting an example.

Also. I think Oprah has done wonderful things and I'm not exactly sure she deserves to rake in 77 million a year but that could just be me. And furthermore, just because one CAN buy a 38 thousand dollar bag, does not mean that one SHOULD. I mean. 38 grand could have bought a lifetime supply of ice cream cones for one lucky kid. And who said money can't buy happiness :-) (obviously kidding)

I honestly would.. if our own hay prices hadn't doubled in the past year. I'll be lucky to feed my own. I sold one last year and have another I'd 'give away' to the right home (nutty Morab ). And I'm considering pts our beloved mini before winter. He is suffering so with heaves and looks less and less fit over the last 2 years

Horse ownership is so difficult when you don't have a money tree in the back yard. And then, when you think you 'do' have a small one sprouting, the crows come and harvest it before you can get even any 'change' off of it!! **** black birds

Looks to me that Oprah herself provides as much money for charity as some small countries.

And there is the run on effect of others following her doing good by doing good themself.
