Opinions/Suggestions for Versatility Competition

So Thanksgiving weekend Im going to a fun show called Cowboy Christmas...

They start it on Friday @ 5pm with a Queens Versatility Contest... Im really thinking about doing it.

I have to do the following English Equitation Pattern, 5 min tack change, Western Horsemanship pattern, and then barrels...

Ill be fine with the pattern work, its the barrels that Im questioning.

Part of me just says take it @ a slow lope, and pray that my pattern work makes up for the SLOW barrel run.

Im pretty much going into this not knowing what the competition is going to be like so I dont know. I do know there is no way that I can properly teach him to give me a GREAT barrel run, because he has never turned a can in his life, so No biggie there im not expecting a miracle.

But feel free to give me your opinions and suggestions...

I also say take it slow and have a nice pretty pattern - for fun at a show my daughter rode her appy gelding in the games, judge even commented on what a nice western pleasure lope around the barrels she had.

With my WP horse I did something like that as well. He didn't have run in him so I took him out in a field and made him run. It turned out to be the best thing I ever taught the horse, how to go fast, balance, and listen still (without bucking.. haha). It made him a better all around horse - transfered to hunters, patterns with speed, and played around with reining later on. I actually pulled it off - got 3rd in barrels with a 24 second run with about 3 weeks of practicing - I was shocked the horse had it in him - thats blazing for the little legs of that boy. haha.

Have fun - but things to practice are just making him go. Sly HATED to go, buck, stop, duck out, anything. Once he figured out how to, he loved it and really put just as much heart into it as he did in WP. I was amazed at how just those 3 weeks of barrel training on him really made him florish as an all around horse.

Not saying you need to do that with skip, just a pointless story. haha.

Its a full weekend strictly FUN show... no show clothes necessary for the normal show on Saturday and Sunday.

On Friday, @ five is the versatility competition. or the "Queens" contest.

It is @ the MSU Pavillion, Im told there are tons of awesome vendors there too.

If you are interested, I can send you the address of the lady that takes the stall reservations. I could probably copy a show bill for you later too. Just let me know.
