Post Opinion on Changing pony's feed

I am thinking about changing Katie's feeding program. (she is in her early 20's, shetland pony) She is currently on 1/2 scoop (roughly 1 quart 2x day)10% pellets (which is fine for her) and t&a hay. Problem is, she has been getting pretty picky about her hay and not really wanting to eat it. I was checking into the Dengi Hi Fi put out by Seminole Feeds. I can use it as a total hay replacer for her. It is timothy, alfalfa and oat hay chopped up with added vitamins and molasses. What do you think? Someone else told me to try the Showing Chaff, but I read all about thier products and think that the dengi would be better. She doesn't need any weight gain, just maintain where she is.

I really wouldn't know what to tell you on that one. I've never "replaced" hay with anything else. I have taken horses off of concentrates but never hay.

Check her teeth. Maybe the hay is bothering her mouth. Especially since she is getting old.

Many people begin to feed older horses pelleted or cubed hay instead of "regular" hay as they get older. I'd check with your vet to make sure though.

Her teeth are fine, just floated a couple of months ago, she doesn't have any problems chewing, it's more like she is getting very picky about her hay, doesn't matter if it's good green t&a or grass hay. I am going to try the dengie, just wondered if anyone else fed it

Beth,

You know I am the Dengie Queen, It is approved by the laminitis trust, and I feed it to Pic. He has hay aswell so he don't get bored, it's in a horseage net, so it last longer.

The Hi Fi Lite is ideal for the M & Ms, don't use showing chaff it is too high, she'll blow up.

Fed to Pic twice a day, with 1/2 sec hay in am and pm, and half bucket of hi fi lite twice, pluse some quick beet, which is also approved by laminitis trust, he does well, well you've seen the photo's and his diet as always been the same. You know this, but if you do change do it gradual. Will tell you more about Dengie tommorow, my eyes are going
