I'm seeing what looks like a fungal infectation in the skin there and under the other hair between the bulbs of the heels. She could have scraped it off or the scab pulled off.
Does she also have an old heel injury there?

The hoof looks like it needs a good trim. I can't tell much about the actual wound though. It does look kind of like a scrape. Was it bleeding alot? (Looks like there's quite a bit of blood draining from it?)

Ok, so if it was a fungal infection, how would I treat it? Does the fungas bleed like that? I've never seen something like it before.
She doesn't that I know of, but I got her when she was 12 (now 22).

The farrier is scheduled for next week.
It wasn't bleeding a lot when I discovered it but it clearly had been before.

Clip the hair completely away from the area Cleanse the area with a mild betadine soap solution. I'm not so sure that there is a fungal infection present. The hair/skin looks wet so you'll need to keep the horse in a dryer environment for a while. If she does have greasy heel/scratches/dew poisoning/etc(you pick the name, they all mean the same thing
), then there are various treatments available. But any treatment will start with getting the hair in the compromised area trimmed off and the horse into a dryer, clean environment.

Thanks Rick.
It's wet because I hosed it off... the field isn't extremely wet, but there is a bit of snow melting still. What treatment should I use? Just the betadine?

Hmm ok well I'm going out there to doctor it up a bit... just have a few questions... if someone could help me out!!
Should I pick the scabs off or not? I cold hosed it yesterday - should I not do that again if it's supposed to be dry? Annnd... can I put the betadine solution all over even where the cut is?

I would personally treat it with a hydrocortisone, neosporin, zinc oxide combo. If you have some, throw some athlete's foot cream (or powder) in as well.
Don't wash it, just wipe the dirt off every day (preferably twice a day) and reapply.
I would not pick the scabs off.

I don't know if its what you're supposed to do, but I pick the scabs off if they're really crusty and coming off anyway or if there is dirt around it. Clean it and scrub it gently.. if you're using betadine solution then awesome but I use triple antibiotic ointment (like neosporin) or Corona on it..
Gert's had a few nicks where she was bleeding..roughly around the same area. I figure she clipped herself with her hind hooves while running around being silly. I just kept it clean and put triple anti biotic ointment on it or Corona..and it healed fine like most wounds.

Thank you
Can I get those ingredients at a feed store?? Or a pharmacy?

Thanks friend
I don't think it's just a cut because of the weird fleshyness and lack of hair. I think I'll shave it back as rick B suggested too. p.s. I'm uploading a video for you!
