I don't think you need to go that much shorter, maybe an inch or a little more. Personally the stocky horses look better with a little longer mane, it makes their neck look better.

I know you said you were going shorter but i think you need to take off more then an inch. especially since if you band it the mane lays flatter and this makes it look longer.

Okay okay!! There is a way to cut a mane with regular scissors that makes it look like it was pulled.

Okay, you know how when you go to pull a mane you grab the long hairs with your fingers, then push back the shorter hairs, and then lastly wrap the long hairs you grasped in your hand around a comb and pull them.

Now, with the scissors, grab the long hairs and push back the short ones, then instead of pulling out the hairs, use the scissors and snip them to the length you want. Don't do alot of hairs at one, otherwise it will turn out bad looking in the end. But keep doing that, grab, push, snip, on the entire mane. It's pretty much the same idea as pulling a mane, except you just cut the hairs you grabbed instead of pulling them out.

I hope that made sense! But in the end (trust me) it will NOT look like it's been attacked with scissors, lol.

Also, if you will be banding it, the mane needs to be more or less 4 inches long, and it even could go a little shorter than that too.

When I bought my horses they where REALLY skittish..I couldn't even get a lead on them...so I knew they wouldn't let me pull the manes. But their manes where all matted. So I got the scissors! bad idea. I cut it straight accross, choppy! and..ew just bad!!!! thankfully it has grown out! so I can TRY to do it again properally.

as for what you have done! LOOKS AMAZING!! especially for using scissors!

I think she's one of those horses that looks better with a short mane. I usually prefer long, but sometimes it looks better short. I have no advice on pulling/shearing and all, as I've never done those before, but good luck!

I'd go with the thinning shears too, but I think she does look nice with a short mane. Gorgeous horse

Want to know my secret? I RARELY pull a mane, I always use scissors Lol.
Practice makes perfect!

Thanks guys! At first I thought it looked bad, because she had that really long mane and then KAPOW! Short!
But the more I look at her the more I like it. I've still got to go shorter now. I won't be banding it, just leaving it at 4 inches and spraying it flat.
My band jobs suc.k.

And that tip for how to "pull" a mane with scissors! I am going to try that! Thanks a bunch!

My grandma adores this horse, and when she saw her mane she was like "I bet she hated that being pulled."
Hehe. Poor grandma.
ANYWHO! I need to trim up Luckys mane (show tomorrow!!) so I'll bring Babe up and finish hers too. I'll get pictures.

I know Jess I had no choice. I would have kept it long if I weren't going to show her. But as it is, I need it short.
It's bad enough I'm not going to band it.

I would take the thinning shears out, but other than that it looks quite respectable.
