One more safe from slaughter...

i have had an eventful christmas! i saved a (stupid) friend of mine's horse from slaughter. she has been keeping him at my parents house for a very long time, and has been wanting to sell him for a while. she really wanted too much for him, considering that he is pretty green and impulsive (with time and attention, he is going to probably be the best horse i have ever owned). anyway, she made a retarded deal with a guy that she thought was her friend- her 10 yr. arab-cross gelding, a decent saddle, a bridle and $100 for ONE pony and a saddle. she was completely taken by someone that she trusted. and he led her to believe that he had a good home lined up for jesse (the gelding), but in fact, he had arranged to sell him to meat packers. so after the deal was more or less done and he came to pick jesse up, my mom called me at my b/f family dinner on xmas eve, and got me to talk to him. he said that he would sell the horse to me for $250 (i guess that was what he was quoted by the packers); i had already told my friend that if she got desperate that i would buy the gelding. but she HAD to buy a pony for her kids. and my mom said that, until i talked to the guy and she overheard, it had never occured to my friend that the guy was planning to take him to market. i knew it right as soon as he said "hello". but then again, i have probably been around that type more often than her, AND he was a supposed "friend". so anyway, my parents gave the guy a check for me, and i have to pay them back, but still. that is probably the BEST $250 i have ever spent. i mean, he isnt a good horse or anything, no papers or training to speak of, but how can i let a horse that i have been taking care of for years go to slaughter? it made me mad that she was so ignorant of this guy, and it made me madder that he gave her the run around. people make me so mad sometimes! but i got a good buddy out of it...

I'd say you were that horse's Santa.
I don't know how people who buy horses to slaughter can sleep at night

GOOD JOB....I'm happy for you and the horse. And just 'cause he doesn't have papers or training doesn't mean he's not a good horse! I bought a mustang for $1. He was a 3 year old untouched stallion of unknown breeding and he turned out to be the most awsome horse ever!
This is Warlock. Good luck with your guy....what's his name by the way?

I agree with pocahontas... I couldn't live with myself if I put ANYTHING into slaughter.. even a chicken or something that I don't exactly fancy

his name is jesse.. he is about the cutest fleabitten gelding.. i thought that i had a pic, but i was wrong! i was messing aroung with him yesterday and realized that he is SOOOO willing to learn... everyone that has ever ridden him has just wanted to run him (he is MEGA fast), and then they would get frustrated when he didnt want to slow down, so they would beat him (redneck idiots that know nothing about horses), so he has no idea how to channel his energy. i am so excited to start training him, you guys have no idea!!!

What a shame, it's so sad when people do stupid stuff like that. But good for you for buying him back! I'm sure he'll be a great horse with a little patience. Good luck with him, keep us updated!

There are no such words that go with a horse as stupid, or ugly just IMO here. They have learned to work with us, learn our language. John Lyons has a new book out called Communicating With Cues, If you buy his book and are not happy with the results you can return the book get your money back.

You saved this horse from the slaughter house, this is priceless...
Wish there were more people like you.
