Exclamation OMG, she cant eat, diffulty breathing!! WE HAVE TO PUT HER DOWN -#38

I need help, this yearling filly is having one heck of a time swallowing, wont eat. Vet left a little while ago, its not Strangles or Lockjaw. He gave her IV antibiotics, bute, and something else I cant think of it.

She has really bad nasal discharge, foul smelling breath and a huge puss infection thats surrounding her throatlatch. Bad part about it is, its several small pockets and we cant get it drained or lance it! I have to put a hot pack on it several times a day to help bring it to a head so maybe we can drain it. Please, is there anything else I can do to make her comfortable???

Vet is comming out again on Monday to check on things and he said if I need him to call. Do any of you have ideas to what it may be?? There is NO wounds, she had her spring tetnus. Vet is unsure what caused it, we just know she has a terrible infection!! I brought her in a few days ago because of the snotty nose and a little swelling and put her on antibiotics right away, over lastnight the swelling doubled and her breathing was bad so I called vet this morning.

As you can see above, she can not bend her poll ^

I dont know how well you can see this, but the swelling is as big as my hand, and raised about an inch. And to top it off it goes unter throatlatch and onto the other side.

Pic taken looking up under throatlatch, you can see the swelling very well from this angle!

My poor girl is so miserable, that swelling is horrible.

Looking from behind, you can kind of see the swelling.

She hasn't swallowed a bee or something?

If she's not drinking then she will dehydrate very quickly. Have you spoken to the vet about an antihistamine injection? It could be a rather nasty allergic reaction. The breathing is enough to send alarm bells ringing. If your vet won't do anything I would suggest getting a second opinion. That swelling isn't anything to sneeze at.

He gave her an anti-inflamatory that was the 3rd shot. How do I explain this, her breathing isnt so bad that its labored. She has no temp, her heart beat is normal (hence his reasoning her airway isnt restricted bad, she is getting plenty of oxygen in her body) Yes she is in bad shape, but not critical. He done everything that he could do today.

Thanks Cathy! She is starting to drink a little, I soaked some hay cubed and gave her a few handfulls. She seemed to do ok, I just dont want her to gorge herself and choke.

Good thing she's starting to drink and eat a little. It really does look like a massive allergic reaction. Lets hope she picks up quickly.
