Arrow Ollie had his chiro/message therapy appt, good news and bad news...

So, first I have to say that I am officially in love with chiro/message therapy work, it is amazing! lol

Ok, now onto the news... Ollie had his chiro/message therapy appt. today to determine if anything is off in his body that is causing him to move how he does. She suspected years ago, she's a good friend and knew Ollie and I before I even bought him and she suspected way back when that his C1 and C2 vertebrae was off but she wasn't allowed to work on him. Turns out his C1 and C2 vertebrea are in deed locked and have been for years, from before I even knew him which was years ago. Since they are locked there is extreme pain, which was very apperant when she was examining that area because he tried everything to move away from her. It was hearbreaking Anyways, with the C1 and C2 like that he can not collect at all and since it has gone on for so long without any treatment of any kind he has been trying to relieve that pain and make things more comfortable for him which has caused the pain and "trauma" to move all teh way to his hind. Every one of the major muscles, there's 25, has some sort of pain and discomfort except 2. So, Ollie will be getting regular 4 hour sessions of chiro/message work starting next week to get him feeling how he should and moving how he should without any problem. That's all the bad news lol The good news is it all very much fixable and by the end of summer he should be 100% better, a totally different horse He will not be getting any hock injections of any kind, wether it be muscle or joint injections, because hopefully this will clear everything up. *crosses fingers!*

I feel so bad for asking him to do all this collection work and flexion when it was causing him so much pain and he just went with it as long as he could to please me. He is such a trooper, he does so much for me... Even when his body can't take it he tries his best. I really couldn't ask for a better horse and soon he'll be all fixed up.

He will most likely be going on a new joint supplement, has to get his siliquin (sp?) level checked to make sure he's getting the right amount, and will probably being going on another supplement that will better his entire body from mind to heart.

Right now he is only able to do simple rides, and by simple I mean he isn't allowed to be put into collection work, flexion work, or any lunging so it's going to be pleasure riding for a bit lol

So, that's the scoop!! Keep your fingers crossed that this all works and does the job

I'm glad you're using a combinatino of Chiro and massage! I did that last Fall when Dancer fell on me and I threw my back out so bad, I went twice a week for 4 wks adn WOW what a difference.

NOW Elle has been getting a weekly treatment for her neck of chiro and a weekly of massage (I am able to do the massage work myself, yippee!!!) In 3 wks time she has gone from about 90% full neck mobility up to about 98% now!

When you can fine a skilled practitioner, both massage and chiro work can have TERRIFIC benefits..... But if you find someone who doesn't truly nkow their stuff, it can also cause MORE pain and inflamation, so I'm glad to hear you found someone who's very experienced and skilled to help out Ollie!

I would recommend having a set of x-rays done of that area if there is so much pain involved prior to getting "adjustments" done. If there has been trauma to that area in the past, there may be new bone growth that could not only be painful but also impinge on the spinal cord if the area is moved.

This is just one of those things that should always be done prior to manipulation of the spine. Heck I had to have full x-rays done of my back before the licensed chiro would touch me. Chiro can help in the right circumstances but it can also do great harm in the wrong circumstances.

THat's actually a good point... When I had my back work done I had fresh xrays from going to Emergency room I was able to provide the Chiro with, so he did not take a new set (less then 3 days old)... Elle has had recent x-rays as well, and I had my vet send a digital copy of them all to the Chiro/Vet in Canada I've had working on her.

I know when I had work done on my older Belgian Tervuren the Small Animal DVM/Chiro that is here in Bellingham also requested we do fresh xrays of his neck area before she'd do any adjustments to ensure that we did not do any MORE damage to an already sensitive area.
