Older Broodmare

I might be leasing an older broodmare (23) from a friend. I the vet says she is sound I am thinking about breeding her one last time and then retiring her. She has had two babies in the last four years (one is a weanling) and has never had an issue settling. I would really appreciate your opinions on breeding an older mare. Yay or Nay?

Oh, just thought I would add, she is a straight egyptian arabian, has good bloodlines and an excellent show record. I plan on keeping the foal for a future show horse.

We have a 21 year old ex-reining mare that just foaled earlier this year, around Feb. As long as she is healthy, go for it.

If she had no problems with her last two foals and her body is still holding up, then go for it, but realize that it is a higher risk pregnancy.

Thanks for all the advice. I am looking very seriously into doing this. I just hope it would go through okay.

If she is healthy and at a good weight then there is no reason she shouldnt have a successful pregnancy. Make sure you get an equine reproductive specialist vet to give her a thorough check over before you go ahead and I would recommend AI only in a mare of this age, not live cover.
It is higher risk, but she is not a maiden and if she is a truly exceptional mare then it may be worth the risk, pending veterinary approval of course.
