Wink "Old Style" vs "New Style" Quarter horses?

This morning my mom and I were watching a old John Wayne movie. And I couldn't help it, but I pointed out to my mother that the horses they used were so stocky looking. And I love that.

And I also have a quarter hosre. But she is slim. And its so werid because at my barn we were talking about what kind of quarter horses we liked?

So my question is - Do you like the "Old style" quarters horses. The more stocky muscular looking horses. That you see every were in older movies.

^ This is a picture of Two Eyed Jack. Diamonds grandpa. I just love how stocky and muscular he looks.

^ Another favorite Joe Reed.

Or do you like the new stallions. The more leaner/fit looking stallions. Still have muscles but aren't that stocky (manly) look lmao.

^ This is Coosa AQHA stallion. He is simply gorgeous too!

^ Cooke County ETC - Beautiful boy.

So I just wanted to hear your opinions!

Hmmm....hard decision!! I really like the big stocky horses, for the halter classes. But I love seeing the "new" quarter horses in the pleasure classes....but if I had to choose, I think I'd go with the "old style" ones....I like to see the stockier type horses.

The "old style" quaterhorse was a more "boxed headed" tough looking horse with lots of bulk about them. Although nowadays the "New style" quaterhorse tends to have a "nicely shaped refined head" and generally being bred alot slimmer and less bulkier unless ofcourse steroids are involved. So quaterhorse have been bred down to still work but look preetier and more elegant.

ohh... and i like the "old style" bulkiness with the "new styles" Refined head. There are still some who haven't been bred down to much.

Oh I love the old type! The new ones... just bred in too many directions instead of sticking with a good thing, IMO. You know is interesting to me, look at the tails on those "ideal" foundation quarter horses. Short- and it does sooooo much for accentuating their hindquarters IMO.

I love the old style quarter horses, but the new style has it's place also. I like the old style for roping and working cattle and even running barrels, and I like the new ones for pleasure and english type work.

I like the leaner ones. Not the TB looking ones, but ones like Coosa. He, IMO, is the PERFECT QH. (except for the short tail LOL)

hmm... well i like the bulkiness about the "old style" although i dont like them too... bulky because there not as agile with such a heavy frame, and i like the "new styles" refined head the "old style" tended to have more of a boxy shape head. sooo... i like the "new style" that has got the refined head but, hasn't been bred down to much and still has that lovely big RUMP!! and nice wide chest but not too heavy as you do want it to be agile.

So you're saying a horse like Doc Bar and Two Eyed Jack didn't have a refined head? Doc has the most refined head I've ever seen on a quarter horse, and he's definately old style.

The old styles are still being bred. I own an old style. Check him out in my photo gallery. Grey.
