Yeah, they look nothing like TB's to me either. I see what you are driving with those pics of Plaudit and Old Joe Bailey but in my opinion they don't look like they are "conformed more TBish", to me they look like they need exersize. And with McCue, well, IMO he isn't that great to start with...comformationally. I guess he was a HARD worker with good temperment.

I like the old type. I love the muscle, I thought they had pretty heads--they had a leading man quality about them. When you got on one and asked for that punch of speed--pow--there it was, and when you wanted to trail ride they went with the flow and it was a pretty smooth ride.

What I don't like to see in some types of "Modern" QH, is post legs, really under sickle hocks, and how downhill they are running these days. The same as breeding for tea cup feet, I don't think breeding to extremes does the QH any favors.

The QH I owned in the early 80's--probably born around 1970. Had lovely, big, indestructible feet, a Cary Grant head, big rump, deep V in front, lovely well set on neck, even at hip and withers. 15.0 HH beautiful Blood Bay. What happen to those QH?

Hmm well have you looked at some of the barrel horses now a days... I see plenty old style QH barrel rtacers who are very agile and quick. I like the old style and I hate to see it allbred out of them. As for the heads... I have an old style foundation mare who has a lovely head IMO, nothing boxy or rough about it though you can't tell very well in the few pics I have of her... with her winter fur lol

Thats due to breeding. YOu can see the Tb even in the head, not all Tbs have massive heads. You can see Tb influence in him all over... look how much his head looks like my Tb racing bred filly... that same little muzzle but he has a bigger jaw bone.

I much prefer the old style Quarter Horse. Which is why I breed for foundation, reining and working cow bred horses. I love a bulldog build, nice head with a kind eye, a working cow athletic ability, etc.
But as stated- just because the horse is high foundation doesn't mean that he/she will be more bulldog built. We've got a dun mare that is 96% foundation and a palomino mare that is 74% foundation and based off of looks you would swear that the palomino is the 96% foundation mare--she is just so naturally built. And the dun is muscular and built very nicely but compared to the palomino she is as bulky.

I love a tall quarter horse that is built like a solid brick wall. I love muscles, I love wide, huge chests, but I like the height. So you can say I like a mixture of the two.

Here is my old guy - Zip Me Hunter.

He has the front end built up like a stock horse but his cute little butt is built and leaned like a TB. He is just odd. But I love him to death. Nice mover!

"I like big butts and I cannot lie..." Haha. Definately old time quarter horse right there.
