Old Helmet?

I have an old velvet helmet that was originally my older sister's. It's big, bulky, and a bit worse for wear (faded, velvet crushed in places, foam inserts worn out). I don't want it anymore but I don't know what I should do with it. I feel bad throwing it out because its still serviceable. I used it for a few months before I bought a lighter plastic one with vents (ahhh glorious vents!). I'm not planning on showing and if I do show it will be some low level schooling show (if they care whether or not I have a black plastic helmet they can go blankity-blank themselves). I'd give it away but I don't know anyone who rides who would need it.

So I guess the point of this thread is to get HGS opinions... Should I toss it or donate it to my barn (or someone on HGS if they want it) in the hope that someone someday might want/need it?

I'd toss it. By the sound of it, it really won't help. All helmets, especially older ones, need to be replaced after their first fall. Although that helmet might not have had any falls, you still dont know how many times someone has accidentally dropped it and weird things like that.

Best bet is to toss it, but thats just me.

I hate throwing things out too but I would 'toss it'. New helmets have a much higher safety standard than the old ones and as gojump said if it has had any knocks then it will be weaker.

I don't *think* there were any falls in it, but now I feel better about tossing it. I'd feel horrible if someone got hurt because of it.

Yes, after that many years it is likely out of astm standards as well as the materials have had a long time to deteriorate. I bet it just 'looks' like a helmet now and would do no better to protect someone than just a hat.

I agree, in that condition it is probably better to just toss it. Sorry!
