okay so i decided to pull it. now i am confused

i read some great pulling threads, one of the threads said:

I believe the proper length for stock breeds (AQHA/APHA/ApHC, ect) is 4". (CHECK YOUR HANDBOOKS!)

what would be a good length for my gelding. we think he is an nsh, or at least half arab. i will start out showing walk/trot, equitation. i am still learning about english braiding, so what is the appropiate braid for him? sorry so many questions i just don't want to look bad when we show.

I personally wouldn't pull it, because he looks Arab to me. . but to each his own. If you decide not to you could do a running braid one of those fishnet looking things. lol

To braid a mane english-style, the correct length should be about the width of your hand. That's a pretty vague measurement, but take it as a starting-point.

Agreed with secret agent! Don't know a lot about showing as I deal with broodmares most of the time, but all get their manes done before going home, at about a hand's width in length.

However, how you do a mane can have affects on the human eye and how the horse's conformation is viewed - a hogged or really short mane can make a horse look stockier, heavier set, while a longer mane may emphasise a neck really lacking in muscle tone, in my opinion...

I have an arab x QH and like it around a hand's width, tho am told to pull an Arab's mane is a crime!

Toodles,

Chris

It all depends on the conformation of your horse. I couldn't tell too much from the pictures, but my guess is that either would look okay on your horse. I personally love a short, nicely pulled mane and that is what I usually see in the equitation classes. If you don't pull it, then you should do a running braid for shows. It is similar to a french braid, only you add the hair by pulling it under instead of over.

There is a proper length for stock breeds? I see some at shows that have 2 inches. My horse has 3....I didn't think the rulebook got specific about that...

I wouldn't pull an arabian or NSH mane but that is JMO. At times I wish my horse had a long mane..oh how I would LOVE to braid it.

I would never cut a mane or a tail my horses have ridiculus amounts of hair.... cause they are horses. LOL. I would say most of their manes are past the point of their shoulder naturally.... its crazy long.

IMO, I think it just looks better for an Arab to have a full mane. I don't really pull anything, though. .so.
As far as shaving, the long bridlepath thing is becoming scarce. I would defiitely not do 10 inches. It's just however much. . .
