Whenever a mare aborts, regardless of the size of the embryo or fetus, the tissue is expelled. It is inaccuate to say it is "absorbed" as that just doesn't happen in the equine. With that said, regardless of the cause, in a late term fetal death, the fetus MUST come out. If the veterinarian had difficulty pulling the fetus, then a fetotomy should have be performed. The equine is not like the bovine and does not do well when fetal and placental tissues are allowed to remain in the uterus once death of the foal has been determined.

Contact a veterinary university that specializes in equine reproduction (Colorado State University or Texas A & M come to mind) and ask to speak to one of the veterinarians there. Hopefully they will be able to assist you and your veterinarian with the best course of action for your mare.

Good luck with the outcome.

Equine Repo I wish to God you were there to guide her through this. Its hard enough when its your first horse to ever foal out and then something this tragic happens. I hope her husband is by her side helping her figure out what to do next. I just get so mad that her vet knew this mare had the fescue and the milk problem. Maybe I'm just shooting my mouth off trying to blame someone. (sorry)

Thank you all for your concerns and support. I tried last night to get someone with a trailer but was unsuccessful. We are new to the town so I don't know a whole lot of people. After trying I went down and let her out of the paddock and she was walking much better she was using her left leg. After that I just came to the house and collapsed in bed. Now after the shock has worn off my heart is hurting for the foal and for Katy. I'm going to make some phone calls today to equine vets and get their opinions. I did look for Katy when I got up this morning and she was standing in the field by the colt.

Unfortunatley my husband is out on the road and I don't know when he'll be home.

I will keep everyone updated as much as I can.

Thanks again for everything.
