I wonder how many pages long the thread will be that Katylynn will make when she actually has the foal?

I think she will foal at the end of march, beginning of April.
Because she knows we are all waiting.
What breed is this mare, and what is she bred too?

No foal. Had to work this morning and then we went shopping tonight. I got to see her for a short time between work and shopping and nothing has changed. She isn't eating her hay so I upped her grain and beet pulp and am given it to her in the morning.

She is a Fox Trotter and she is either bred to another gaited horse or a Paint.

You know how when I pregnant woman is close to going in to labor and she will walk to help induce labor. Well I've been taking her on walks when it has been nice out hoping to get her to go into labor.

The weather has been nice enough to ride but I can't ride her and it's killing me. I just want to hop on her back and go.

I haven't read the article, but I'm sure it reiterates what is pretty common knowledge <smile>. There must be some very specific criteria in place with the equine before inducing. The horse is unusual in that the fetus (NOT the gestational length or the mare) determines the length of pregnancy. And, there can be huge variability in the length of pregnancy - 330 to 370 are all within the range of what is considered "normal". 340 is merely an average of averages.

Inducing the equine can have catastrophic results. While it is done in high risk pregnancies, there are several parameters that need to be in place including a gestational length of at least 340 days, milk is white and a few other things that I can't remember off the top of my head <rolling eyes>. Inducing before the foal has decided it's time to come forth usually results in a premature foal and all of the problems associated with that. Unfortunately, Katylynn, I'm afraid your mare wouldn't qualify just going on her udder development - or should I say LACK of udder development <lol>.

It "can" be done and I've certainly done it on mares that were in the high risk category. But, it's not a course of action to be taken lightly.

Hope that helps!

You should just leave her for a while. You know that is when the babies always come, as soon as you can't be there!
