So she is basically due anytime between now and February 4th.

There seems to be a trend (ill have to pull the article I recently read) that more and more horses are going full 12 months. So I would give her till the middle of January before inducing unless you can pinpoint dates better.

And a Repro Specialist is someone you really should look into talking to.

I was told by a prominent vet (one I consulted cause I couldn't afford them to come out) that inducing is never or should never be done in horses.... thats only in humans.

I agree with BW--lots of mares going to 12mo. this year. My mare is traditionally early, but went late this year as well.

I read it in an article. I haven't seen anything to make an opinion myself, other than a few mares that I personally know, have gone over 12 months every time since I've known them.





PEG....yes, I've seen an induction. All the vet did was administer Oxy. use to be a huge thing to do in the old days, now a days it is rare, and usually after a ton of ultrasounds measuring the amniotic sac fluid levels, momma's health, etc.

There are things vets will induce for. mare gets injured and cannot carry foal to term, distress of the foal/momma, things of that sort. And if you know the exact date of conception, if the mare is going 13 months, the vets will think hard about inducing to prevent injury to the mare during labor. I'll have to ask my vet what his "date" is to administer oxy.....give me a bit and I'll track him (and my new vet...lol...poor new vet doesn't know what is going to hit him with me...unless my vet warned him. LMAO)

But there are occassions that may get the vet to induce. it isn't often these days anymore that you find "regular" inductions....but there are still some. race horse farms use to years ago....but the trend has backed down a lot.

As to why the "trend" may be beginning.....better health and nutrition probably plays a HUGE role in the development.

Even humans are going mroe than 40 weeks. "Average" was told to me to be 42 weeks now a days for a human mom to carry when I was carrying Connor. Maybe because our "worry" levels have dropped with the technology available to tell us everything is AOK.....better health, nutrition, etc.
