Ok, while I was typing, I got on the phone.

My vet will pop Oxy at day 400. ONLY if they have an EXACT last day of conception. Either through AI or Live cover. if the horse was pasture bred, he will go by the date the mare was pulled from the pasture ONLY. But so far, he has not had to. Not for this reason. But he has a "set date" for future reference as a "protocol" if it ever happens. But he doesn't "let people know" this, he just tells most owners the same you have heard.....they don't like to induce for fear of severe complications.

Then of course for distress, he has induced a very emaciated mare at day 300 because she was down and it was bad for both mare and foal at this point. How she survived to that point...he has no idea.....

I'm calling the other vet...........................

He too does it at day 400 for the same reasons. Him and my vet use to work at the same clinic....and that was the protocol there.....and he stands by it today. He hasn't had to do it, but has heard of the other 3 vets at the clinic that they worked at (including mine) having to have done it. Recalled the emaciated mare that my vet did......a mare that broke her pelvis they just did a c-section on, and one that the owner insisted doing at day 365. If they can induce with oxy, they would rather do that then have one torn up mare from delivering an overdue foal or possible c-section. But they are rare that they happen. The other two were from several years ago, the c-section and owner induction were before he ever got to the practice.

Does that help Peg..???

It would have to be Shadow's Misletoe. What if it's New Years what name could she get then?
