Counting is quick... it's sorting that takes a while. Hard to get all the colored swimmers seperate from the solids. I mean look at this year? We got 2 solid foals, all because those ones are the most persistant swimmers. :-D

Funny thread!!! We have Guaranteed Gold schooled to the "mirror". We took him to a farm to live cover a mare there, and after he was "done the deed", we turned him loose in the arena to let him chill for a bit afterwards. Well - we heard this excited ruckus in there, looked in, and saw him teasing himself in the reflection in the plexiglass door. He was aroused, VERY excited, and trying to figure out how to breed that gorgeous cremello that he saw! So - I bought a plexiglass mirror from Home Depot, we made a frame for it and hung it in the breeding shed where the phantom mare is. When he turns the corner and sees himself in the reflection, he gets VERY excited (!), puffs up, starts screaming at the beautiful cremello staring back at him, drops, gets very ready to go and we back him up to the phantom and he gets to "watch" the cremello It helps immensely in a few ways. a) we save the tease mares for the stallions that really require the stimulation and they start getting pretty ticked off by about June, so as much as we can "save" them, the better it is for when we really need them b) its safer as we have one less horse in close proximity to deal with and c) it saves labour as someone doesnt have to go and get the mare and then take her back to her paddock once again Towards July/August, GG starts to need a "real woman" the odd time as he has figured out that cremello in the mirror is totally non responsive to "his needs and desires" We do laugh though. Typical stupid male ... Sees something "visual" and thats all they need to "get in the mood for love"!!! Perhaps we'll try magazine pictures next of mares in "provocative poses" and see how he likes them!!! |

That's just too funny! I've heard of some stallions with odd quirks but never one that found himself that attractive.

It's actually pretty funny ... When he comes out of the barn, the round pen is on his right where we live cover the mares and the phantom to the left of that area, and then the paddock where the tease mares are for collecting is to the left of the phantom So - when he comes out, he looks longingly to the round pen, then to the paddock on the left and when he doesnt see any girls waiting for him, he looks down towards *******e - the ever patient, always agreeable, ever ready, vinyl covered woman of his dreams (!) And then he starts looking for that beautiful cremello that he KNOWS is just around the corner, peeking and waiting for him. He puffs up, screams and strikes out at the cremello, puffs up some more, challenges once again and then gets very excited! It usually takes us about 2-3 minutes beginning to end with a real tease mare and about 4-5 minutes with the mirror, so the extra few minutes is well worth saving the tease mare for sure! but funnily enough his volume is greater with a tease mare than with the mirror, so if we know we need to split into several doses we will opt for the mare instead The things you learn - huh?! |

| Senior Member+ | I have to ask... does the dummy smell like a mare? How do they get the stud to actually mount it... just doesn't seem like an easy task to me... -Bella ![]()

| Senior Member+ | A method that a friend of ours used was to use a mare in heat standing beside the phantom. When the stud went to mount the mare, he was guided to the phantom. Once they understand the same result happens be it a mare or the phantom, they are more than happy to hop on board.

Now - I have NO idea why the board edited out the name of the phantom mare, which is G-E-R-T-R-U-D-E !!! No - she doesnt smell like anything much, except for smelly stallion bodies I guess ... And yes Lexy is correct. In the beginning, there will be a tease mare in close proximity and when the "moment of truth" approaches, usually the stallions dont much care at that stage if you have a BOX there or a real live mare! They tend to be light on their front ends anyhow, so as they get excited and are starting to go "up", you guide them away from the real mare to the phantom mare instead and then instincts and "desires" take over from there In some cases, mare's urine has been dabbed on the phantom mare as well to give them an olfactory reminder as well. Each stallion is SO different. Some wont tease to light coloured mares. At a facility I used to collect at, one stallion needed 2 mares on either side of the phantom or he wouldnt approach. One needed to be collected off a real mare - he wouldnt collect off the phantom at all They are all such individuals with regards to the temperature and firmness of the AV as well - make it too hot or too cool and they refuse to use it. Too firm or too soft - same thing. Men, huh?! There has been once or twice per season that GG simply is not in the mood for whatever reason. He is usually over and done with in about 3-6 minutes but on these occassions, 15 or 20 minutes later, he just stands there looking bored and uninterested. So - you just have to laugh as it happens so infrequently, CANNOT stress about the fact that the FedEx office closes in 45 minutes and grrrrr ..... you just HAVE to co-operate - NOW!!! And the mare is going to ovulate tomorrow for sure, take him for a walk, let him nibble some grass, let him take a LONG walk back to the breeding area and that usually gets him excited and by the time we get back once again he is ready to go You just cant get mad or frustrated with them no matter what horrible time contraints you are under or they sense it and simply wont co-operate at all ... |
