Well if we don't sell him this year....
One might consider it. Shrugs shoulders. But its food for thought.
And I am sure that dummy is no small price either.

Explain this to me?
I have TONS of questions for whomever does this.
There are a variety of methods that are used. A jump mare where a mare in season or an ovarectomized mare (her ovaries have been removed) is used. The stallion is allowed to mount the mare and then his penis is deflected into an artificial vagina. Another method is jumping the stallion onto a breeding phantom. Once a stallion has been trained to a breeding phantom, most are quite happy using that over a mare...they don't kick, bite or file a protest and the boys usually figure that out pretty darn quickly. You can also train a stallion to ground collect, where he is teased up to a full erection and then his penis is again directed into an artificial vagina. Lastly, you can do a chemical collection where a specific combination of drugs are used - imipramine and xylazine (Rompun) or detomadine (Dormosedan). Stallions will spontaneously ejaculate when they are going in or coming out of the tranquilizing phase of the drug.

I also read some stallions are picky about the dummy (which come in ALL sizes). If it's something you want to offer, you have to consider if all the costs and training him to do it would be worth what you'll make.
While breedign mounts do come in a variety of sizes, it usually isn't necessary. The boys usually aren't particular about the breeding mount but can be more picky about the AV (artificial vagina). Temperature and pressure are considerations. Costs involved are relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to the veterinary costs involved should your stallion be kicked during breeding. We charge $350.00 to train a stallion to the breeding mount. Building a breeding mount can be done for under $100.00 (there are directions on our website for building one). Pick up a microscope on Ebay for under $100.00. Artificial vagina will run about $350.00 to $400.00. And, all the miscellaneous other items you can purchase for under $200.00. So, you can set up to do collections and AIing for as little as $1,000.00. And, if you have more than one stallion, obviously those costs are defrayed between multiple stallions. You only need one AV (use disposable liners), one microscope, etc....

Also when shipping semen do you send the whole thing or each time you collect that amount goes to that person buying it?
When shipping semen, you want to send 500 million progressively motile sperm for each insemination dose. And, you want to dilute that semen to a final concentration of 25 to 50 million per ml. The average stallion will produce enough sperm to inseminate between five and fifteen mares. So in answer to your question, no...you don't ship the whole thing. It's counterproductive to do so. Semen needs to be extended and does considerably better if extended to the final concentration noted above.

Hope that helps!

Nope, but you can find directions on how to make them online, if you have a handyman around.... whoops! Kathy already posted that!

Wow Equine Repro, less cost than I initially thought.
Its not something I am real serious about right now, with the market the way it is......
but ya never know what the future holds.
Education in this form costs nothing and I thank-you!

Peg, we bought a nice dummy for $1500 w/the AV. Had it shipped from Maryland for $150. Bought a Colorado AV set up from ARS (Animal Reproduction Systems - Home) and it got us through a whole season and partially into the next. We ship 1 billion sperm per-shipment for our mare owners and depending on if we need to ship on one or more mares, will include 2 doses. We're usually very generous with our shipments, figure it doesn't hurt and depending on the situation on the other end, will give them enough if they choose to split and AI before and after ovulation.

Anything to get some Player swimmers in some nice mares
