Oil or Polish?

I'm just curious... last year at a show I had an english judge tell me that I should be using oil on Babe's hooves (I had them done black, was doing english and western that day).

I'm just curious... does it really have to be oil? It rubs off on the grass before I even get there.... would clear polish be accepted just the same in the english ring?

I would go with clear polish, oil it just going to grab all the dirt as soon as you enter the ring.

But maybe she was was refering to maintence not show, thinking maybe your horse's hooves looked dry and cracked.

I think you should use clear polish. I've heard of using baby oil, but my friend tried it and it attracted a ton of dirt.

I would use clear. The judge wouldnt be able to tel if it isnt oil, and it would look really nice

I think the problem with it rubbing is in the oil you are using. If it's rubbing off, then you didnt let it dry properly. If it still doesnt work try coating it with clear on top. You could probably go with clear as long as its not against show/division rules.

I'm just curious, what kind of english class were you in that what was on your horse's hooves mattered? If the judge thought that the hooves looked dry, I can see making that kind of remark. What colour are your horse's hooves naturally? I'd go with everyone else and say, yes, use a clear polish, but I'm at a loss as to what this had to do with anything in an English class? As long as the horse is turned out nicely, what does it matter whether it's hoof polish or hoof oil? Just wondering

I was in an english pleasure class, I believe, but I had black polish on, which apparently isn't supposed to be used in english classes? Babes front hooves are black, her hind ones are white, but the judge didn't know that.

Im not keen on hoof polishes because allot of them have harsh drying agents. What we use to do before a show was use baby oil on the nose, around the eyes and hooves..to bring out that wet look, it worked well and it's safe.
