haha..sorry kinda ove the top there but i swear..i dont know what else i can do to help keep his color..

i see all these black horses that stay out all the time and just never fade..and then my horse looks like a weird darbayish horse ! lol.

I know what its like!!

The best way is to have a rug that protects them from uv on all the time.

Theres not really any other way but you can buy dyes to turn them black again. You wash them with it before a show.

Black horses can be very flustrating.

I feel your pain. We had paints and i hatet trying to keep the white on them white, and I said I will never own another horse with white on it. I have 2 blacks, a red and a bay roan now. There is what is geneticall a true non fading black i guess like the friesians have. I guess ours are fading black. Our TWh was stunning he was a black beauty but by July he was a dappled brown with black, I hated it. Thye are in a pasture 24/7 I did not want to put a sheet on or stall them. Do you think he could stand under the shade...no! We started supplementing, them with BOSS, bean meal, beet pulp, and ground flax. We have been doign this all winter, and they shed out and have mazing coats, and have not faded YET! I am sure they will, but maybe not as bad. I have heard that paprika is the mane ingrediant in black as knight and I started that last year, but could only find little bottles of it, and that got old buying paprika everywhere i went. I heard that you have to do it in the winter so they shed off the winter coat and the supplements are in the summer coat. I am going to get a big bulk bag of paprika and try it for real this winter. I know I am not nelping much, but you can go to my picasalink and see pictures of our horses, you can see how the black ones sunfaded last year, I will keep posting pictures on there and you will see my little supplement experiment. So far i am happy they look in good condition, their hoofs are wonderful, they shed out so nicely, and are very happy.

There are feed through supplements such as BAK, and paprika

you can also use a UV protective spray on

or also keep him in a sheet when he's outside during the day.

Are you sure that he isn't actually a bay or brown color? And presents as what we perceive as black in the winter? Just a thought.

There are several feed through products. As well as sheets/protective gear that are UV rated.

Exactly what I was thinking. My mare is registered "BROWN" on her AQHA papers but holds a near jet black color all year long but has brown dappling throughout. The OPs horse could very well be "brown"

true....here is a picture of a horse we had that was registered brown
and here is some we have that are registered black

the first pic our ASB, the second our TWH that was badly sunbleached, blech! and him now.
They say they are brown if thier "armpits" (dont know what they are called) is brown or has brown on their nose of around eyes they are brown not black.
