OH ********* My horse hurt got hurt pretty bad.

Sorry about all the **. That is really what I feel like. I let my barrel gelding run on a track for the first time, and he hurt his tendon. I feel sooooo stupid. He was running and then he quit and settled into a slow lope. I thought he was tired because we had just sprinted a couple hundred yards and he hasnt gotten to really run flat out like that unless he was running for home on the barrels. I pulled him up and I knew that he was seriously lame as soon as he came out of his canter. I didnt feel a thing while he was loping, but now he is dead lame. I dont know how bad it is, but he is in quite a bit of pain. I buted him and he seems more comfortable, but he limps EXTREMELY bad on that leg. We couldnt get him in to the vet today because they were closed but we are going to take him in first thing in the morning. I feel sooo stupid. If anything happens to him it will be my fault because I didnt pull him up very soon because I didnt feel anything. Sorry about the long vent.

It sounds like it could be either a bowed tendon, or a torn/strained suspensory. Either way, I would spend quite a lot of time in the next several days cold hosing or icing (icing is better) that legs as many times a day as you can, 20-30 minutes at a time. Give it 20-30 minutes, then put a standing wrap on, only IF you know how to do that.

oh, that stinks! I'm sorry. I agree with JB. Cold hose or ice and wrap it. I found an article on wrapping injured legs in one of my H&R mags a day or so ago...maybe there will be something in there that's helpful until the vet comes! good luck!

Oh, that does stink. BUT! Been there done that...did the same thing to my barrel mare a few years back. We ran, and she ended up going lame. Turned out she tore a ligament in her front leg....that was a fun and long recovery. I'll cross my fingers for you that whatever it is, it's not that bad.

I have had lots of success with the magnetic tendon boots in that situation.

You just don't want to use magnets on an acute injury - too much heat/inflammation already.

Update: I got home from school and checked it. He is putting more weight on it, but now the other leg is getting swollen too. I think it is because he is really heavy in the front end and puts way too much weight on his front. Now that he puts most of the his weight on the one front foot, I think that it is getting to be kind of strained too. I am going to hose them everyday.

I will keep you updated and possibly see about some pics.

soory to hear that your horse has hurt his leg but for the other leg if you put a bandage on it it will give it support and stop him hurting his leg too much more
