I had bought a used Western saddle for my 10 year old daughter to use. The fenders had major dry rot issues so I've ended up buying her a replacement saddle (it's only been 2 1/2 months since we bought the horse and I already have a magnitude of tack stored up). Upon closer inspection, it appears that the fenders are the only pieces that are suffering dry rot as the rest of the saddle appears somewhat supple. On a side note, when we bought the saddle (used from a consignment leather shop) we cleaned and conditioned it heavily prior to using and then intermittently once we started using it. Is it possible to replace the fenders with rough out fenders so that my daughter can use this as a gaming saddle, if the rest of the saddle is determined to be safe for use (by someone other than my "green" eyes)? I thought it would be a great way to re-use the saddle and to keep me from having to buy another saddle for gaming in a year (as I won't let her use her show saddle for gaming if I can help it). Has anyone ever heard of this being done? thanks! |

Most saddle shops or saddle repair shops can order replacement fenders. The cost is usually $50-125, depending on size and quality. If you don't have a saddle shop in your area, then look for a smaller online shop. I say smaller because many large online shops won't do little custom orders like that.

Replacing fenders is fairly easy, you're in luck!
