Odd Bump on Stomach?

I have noticed a large sized bump (longer than my fist) on the underside of Feather's stomach. She's not tender there, and it's firm.

Anyone ever heard of it?

Sorry she's so dirty. Still working on shedding the dreaded winter coat that leaves me with no choice but letting her be a dirt ball until it's hot enough for baths.

Looks like an edema of some kind. But then again I'm remembering that edemas are usually kind of soft/squishy to the touch and you said this one is firm so I'm not sure. It is a place where an edema would form though. Grr I'm just not sure but I'm betting someone else will have a better guess.

Looks like an Umbilical Hernia to me. Is it right where the umbilical cord was? If so, that's more than likely what it is.

Sometimes these show up in various places when showing signs of founder. Also, I have had a mare that had them up higher on each side. Never knew what caused them.

What are the other signs of founder?

Are either of the others health-endangering?

Here's some other signs of founder
  • Increased temperature of the wall, sole and/or coronary band of the foot.
  • A pounding pulse in the digital palmar artery. (The pulse is very faint or undetectable in a cold horse, readily evident after hard exercise.)
  • Anxiety
  • Visible trembling
  • Increased vital signs and body temperature
  • Sweating
  • Flared Nostrils
  • Walking very tenderly, as if walking on egg shells
  • Repeated "easing" of affected feet
  • The horse standing in a "founder stance" (the horse will attempt to decrease the load on the affected feet). If it has laminitis in the front hooves, it will bring its hindlegs underneath its body and put its forelegs out in front called "pointing"
  • Tendency to lie down, whenever possible or, if extreme, to remain lying down.

Well she is not showing any of these signs by any means. My ferrier said there are signs of founder frm some time ago long before I got her. Could the bump be old and I just didn't notice it at first being left over?

It could be something she had and you just didn't notice. the longer I look at the more I keep thinking edema. How old is she? What has she been doing work wise lately?

They do not have to be soft, I don't think... if there is enough fluid they can be hard. It is possible she could have knocked herself there and it is a little edema, or that she had a reaction to some sort of bite.

As Imjustjoking22 said it could be a reaction to a bite... I wish I had a picture of it but right after I bought callie she got a lump like that on her belly right before her hind leg. It was there for a couple days then started to go down and eventually went away. In the end it felt like it was a bite because it had a tiny dry spot in the middle of where it was.
If it isn't bothering her and her vitals are good then I'd say just keep an eye on it/her. If it doesn't go away soon, gets worse, or starts oosing maybe have it looked at.
