| Senior Member+ | Odd bump on my mare's hindquarters
My mare has had this odd bump on her hindquarters since we've owned her. It's been looked at by a vet but she didn't see it as a concern...but she isn't the best vet in the world if you know what I mean. Here is a picture of it. It's on her hindquarters right above her leg. Should I be worried, and can I get this removed for cosmetic reasons?

I think what you are seeing is what's called a "hunters bump". There's nothing wrong with that. If you look at my mare you can see she has it too (more prominent than your mare). ![]() If anything I can see wrong with your mare would be that she looks really down hill. But she looks like she can be standing on a down hill surface or she is young and she's in that stage where her butt grows faster than the front.

Can you point out specifically what you're talking about? Is it on the side or top of her rump? A hunter's bump isn't necessarily purely cosmetic. It's cause is in a strain or tear of the ligament(s) in the sacroiliac region. While it may never seem to bother a horse, there can be compensation for it that can rear its ugly head down the road.

I looks like something, some foreign body was or is in there at one time and it's created a "scar pocket" either from an infection or it harboring an infection. If it's hard and not hot, then it's probably an "artifact" and will not hurt her at all. However, if it's squishy and "fluid" then I would want it lanced and drained and a course of antibotics for it. I would not attempt to "remove" the lump as you will leave quite a scar there where it is cut out. So cosmetically, it won't help to remove a fibrous mass, but if you don't mind a bit of a scar, it can be done.

This may help you figure were the bump is coming from... Explain exactly where it is. (Maybe if you put the pic on paint and circle the spot on paint and then copy and paste the pic on here.) Also, is it swollen/ warm/ inhibiting her movement in anyway?

Oh and she does not have a "hunters bump". Just a nicely rounded butt with some exageration because she's head down right now, LOL.

DB, that is what I was suspecting too, that "lumpy" looking spot right about level with her underbelly line. Horses get all sorts of "lumps" that might be something, are often nothing.

Oh, ok.... No, that's definitely not "hunters bump" ![]() It could be just an area where she got a little nip and it rose up or a bug bite that rose up.... That's my guess...
