Post OBEYS ON HIS OWN-NOT WITH OTHERS

IF I RIDE MY HORSE ON HIS OWN OR WITH ONE OR TWO WELL BEHAVE OTHERS HE DOES AS HE IS TOLD BUT WHEN HE IS IS A RIDING SCHOOL SITUIATION-LIKE IN A LESSON HE DOESN'T.
IF WE ARE ASKED TO HALT FROM THE REAR OF THE RIDE HE WON'T! IF WE HAVE TO STAND IN A LINE LIKE WHEN YOU HAVE TO WAIT YOUR TURN TO GO TO A JUMP -HE WON'T.
I WILL NOT RESORT TO PULLING HIS TEETH OUT AND I DON'T WANT TO PUT A FLASH NOSEBAND ON HIM OR A STRONGER BIT. (HES YOUNG)
I HAD HIS BACK AND TEETH CHECKED AN HE IS FINE.
EVERYONE SAYS HE IS BEING BAD.
HE DOES UNDERSTAND HALF HALT AND HE HAS BRAKES WHEN RIDDEN ON HIS OWN.
WHAT DO I DO?

If he doesn't like waiting when the other horses go off around him why not try circling him, to give him something to focus on. After doing a few circles with him, give him the option to stand still and if he doesn't keep on circling around with him. It doesn't seem to me like he is trying to be naughty, just that he gets anxious and doesn't want to be left by the other horses. This is something which could be solved with patience and experience. When in the arena try letting him stand in the middle while another horse walks and trots on the rail around him. If he fusses, walk or trot him a few laps staying on the inside of the ring and then give him a chance to rest again. After repeating this he should relish the chance to stand still. Good luck!

Well, he has to listen no matter what the situation. You can reinforce your aids with a crop, when in your group situation take turns being in the rear. I had a very headstrong horse who when he did not stop I made him turn in very tight circles using leg and rein cues. Eventually this got to be too much of an effort on his part and he eventually got the clue and listened.

I think make it easier to do the right thing than the wrong thing. Make doing the wrong thing very hard to do. I know easier said then done, what does your trainer say?

My horse did that when i first show her.
She just did not like to stand at the show but will at the barn. They are impatience and do the circles it does do wonders.

The circles. And if that doesnt work, you can try to pet him, and distract him. Also, test things out, see if a particular horse or rider in that group bugs him. My arab was really uptite around this other horse, and I did some work on it. Turned out perfect.

the answers or solutions i have had from my trainers are a) to hit him. (this makes him tear off like a rocket or
b) to pull his teeth out (but pulling back on the reins makes him go back or sideways)- going back is dangerous in case it leads to rearing and sideways i get my leg crushed against the kickingboards.
c) they say he is being ignorant
d)put a flashnoseband on so he can't open his mouth (tried this once or twice made a bit of difference - slightly but ****** him off)

if i keep him moving or turn him round to face the horse behind him he is fine!
I have done the circling thing with him too.

Well, he has "social issues" if he behaves by himself but not with others.

Many horses who are usually worked by themselves, not with others, have issues because they want to do what everyone else is doing.

LOTS of work with others is a good start. One or two other horses in the arena while you work would be a good start.

During large sessions, take him away from everyone and stand off to the side. MAKE HIM STAND. If he won't stand, like someone else said. CIRCLES.

A horse who won't behave around other horses can become an arena nucense and can land you kicked OUT of the arena.

I wouldn't hit him because he's trying to socialize with the other horses. Though he needs to learn to be quiet.

When you work by yourself. Make him stand a little bit before you jump. Teach him more patience.

Lots and lots of work.

I think everyone's pretty much covered getting him under control. My advice is to find a different trainer. That is absolutely ignorant and dangerous advice.

ok.
Thanks for everyones advice.
Because he is good on his own its confusing.
When in an arena, when people are warming up before a show he will get upset or maybe 'not concentrate as much' is a better way of putting it but this is improving.
And he will stand in the midle of the arena and let them fly past!

It's only if he has been behind someone who has been moving then is asked to halt or has been waiting in a queue behind some one and the go on and he is supposed to stand that there is a problem.

When the ride was in trot and the person in front of me had to canter he use to rocket off after thembut i have now got him under controll and stoped him going that.

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!
