I think this is a good spot for it. But I was on another forum and I saw someone who needed a nurse mare, and I noticed people talking about mares who supplied nurse mares for a business. How is it that they do this?? Do they bred mares for really late or really early babies so the baby can be weaned and then the mare can be used later. Or is there something special they do to the mare to make her a nurse mare??? I was quite interested because I've never seen farms that offer nurse mares and couldn't find anything on the site I was on. Hope that made sense ... aha |

There is some mares that have milk all the time, my friend leased a mustang that had that, and some mares will react to foals being introduced, and bag up, although I am honestly not sure the details

there are some farms that continuously breed mares just for milk and the babies are biproducts of the industry ... some are adopted. if you look up 'nurse mare foals' you'll get alot of information

So I read the articles. And do you think that if thoroughbred broodmares (for racing) were allowed to be artificially bred it would help decrease the demand for nurse mares?? Obviously it wouldn't take it away completely. That's sad stuff though. The poor foals. What happens to the poor foals then??. |

sometimes the foals get adopted. i think embrio transfer would be the best way too do it. then your mare dosn't even have too go through the pregnancy

There are articles that talk about "inducing" a mare's milk production. From one article (i'd have to get the info).....the milk isn't as rich as a mare who had a "live" foal, but it is possible to chemically induce a mare. However, costs...risk....and amount of production is unstable from another article I was reading....which is why we aren't seeing it yet. But hopefully, in the future, we will see more of chemical induction for nurse mares over foaling out foals.
