they arent filled in enough with fat, very prominent. Is what would indicate either still lack of wieght or muscle. Unfortunently I dont have any pics of what Im talking about. and my mare has gained wieght/muscle now....

I would try doing belly lifts with her... it DOES help with hay bellys/big bellys, as well as bringing up the topline. I use a towel, and two people to help.. make sure if you do it, to go slow.. but breathe out and release slower...

yes I saved the pic and added a line to show what is sticking out
heres the original

and heres to modified one

My mare had a huge hay belly but her withers where like his, and the top line of her back on the sides of the spine was flat and showed ribs alittle. It was more of a lack of muscle for her but wieght too, her foal was pulling her down, and she was out of shape from tying up earlier in the year

That's a picture of Blue... he has a hay belly.

You're mare does not look that fat, really. Slightly chubby... but with winter approaching, extra weight won't hurt her any.

Thanks for the pic. That really helps!

Carly- I have never heard of belly lifts before?? That is a really cool link. I think that is something that I could do with her.

yep I would say he suffers from the common, pregnant gelding syndrome....we have a few geldings at our barn with that

Your right, I definitely don't want to cut down with winter coming on. I think I will just try the exercising and some tummy lifts and see how she does.

I was just really concerned when my vet said that I'm not feeding her enough.

No probelm at all! glad to help!
I do belly lifts with alot of horses... is a wonderful excersize...sometimes they are a bit "annoyed" or "confused" by it at first...
