Right, as timberline said, hay belly doesn't necessarily mean overweight. I don't see this horse as underweight by any means, and I would not be upping her grain.

How good is your hay? If it's too stemmy, that could lead to a hay belly. How did the vet determine she wasn't pregnant? What has been your parasite control program over the last couple of years?

Thanks guys! I really appreciate your input. I'm hoping to have a round pen by Christmas so we can play some games. My rear gets too tired running all over the pasture. lol! I need to lose some weight and tone up too so this should be good for both of us.

I just wish our evenings were longer again so I could ride in the evenings. It's almost dark by 5:30pm. So Frustrating!

This last batch of hay has been super good. The one previously was last years batch and could have been better so I think we're getting on the right track there. They have been on the new hay for about a month and a half.

He hand checked her at first. He felt that her uterus was quite enlarged but wasn't sure if it was a baby or if she was just in heat. He ended up doing an ultra sound and didn't see anything. He did also notice a cyst. He said it wasn't anything to be concerned about right now but to keep an eye on her temperment.

I got Betty at the end of July of this year. I have dewormed her twice since Iv had her with Equimax.

Here's a picture of the pasture and you can see my old mare's belly also.

I guess I'm the big bellied horsey mom!!!

Do you think there could be something in the pasture that could be causing this?

The vet didn't think that she was in any danger. This was the first time I had been to this particular vet so I don't feel super comfortable with him yet.

For extra exercise would you do some lunging?

The grey morab mare (Drizzle) is my old mare that had a hay belly also.

Betty's a dark brown appendix mare.

Your right! She does look black in that pic. I thought you were being funny. Heres the whole picture. It was taken with a cheap disposable camera so the quality kind of bites.

My barn isn't really blue either. lol! It's white and the dirt is brown and not gray. Just a really bad picture. lol!
Here's a good pic of her when I first got her.
