Those poor horses! We recently rescued a 35 year old horse from a 4-h/rescue near our town. They say they are helping all of these old horses but they are all like 30 and up and should not be ridden they are all underweight and are ina apasture with no shelter. We do rescue but we dont adopt out we have a private boarding farm but we also have 13 rescues but they get the same care as our eventers.I think it is terrable how people can do that to horses.

Just curious if all animals were in good weight, if they had food and water avalible. Maybe there is something you could mention to the ASPCA just to get the rescue to comply with all laws regaurding animal cruelty, and housing.

oh my, where is that shelter, I don't think I have been to that one, is it in redding? ahh I am not sure, but my grandma got a horse from one of the rescues in redding, it was starved and had sand in it's tummy, it didn't gain a pound their, and one of the other horses kicked her knee, she now has a lump on her knee cap (sorry if i am not using the right term) and when she exercises slightly she falls on the leg that was kicked,
those places aren't lovely at all, the people who work there are very rude too...

This place sounds far from a rescue facility if you ask me.
The place sounds like it is worse than a slaughter pen. At least at the slaughter pen the horses do not suffer like what you described and photographed.
Before you go on to your next horse and sell your old horse give a thought to where he/she may end up. Is moving up or on to another animal worth it.

Wow, how awful! I feel for that mare with rainrot. That's one of the most terrible cases of rainrot I've ever seen! They don't sound very responsible. I think that the owners should tell you more about the horse you might end up owning, you don't just want to buy a random horse you know nothing about. If they can't afford to keep a decent facility, I don't think they should be doing this, even if their cause is good,
.

Personally, I'd be telling them everything out of my mind, but that's just my blunt personality. It's not right to use curb bits in unexperienced hands, even though any type of bit can be harmful in unexperienced hands. I'd talk to those people if I were you. Why don't you also try calling ASPCA and tell them about it, if all this neglect is bad enough.

Thats horrible. They really need to get some more help.. or get rid of some horses. I can't belive the curb bits, that could ruin some good horses. If you put a curb in Brandys mouth she'll rare up... so it can def. cause some problems. The horse with rain rot really needs to be treated....

Well, good luck! Best of wishes for whatever you do!

Sadly this happens alot.....

There is a lady I know claims to be a private rescue but she isn't.
The horses she has she gets for free, does nothing to get the horse vetted and then passes them off as rescues for several hundred dollars.
She does minimal things to help the horses and there is one that needs xrays and the other euthanized as the leg will never get better and the horse has no quality of life. She has been like she is for several years and is skinny and cant gain weight or she could break her good legs.
But you can't make people see the difference between being a rescue and a collector. She is getting rid of some of them I feel for the new owners though as she does not tell the whole truth on these horses.
She takes donations but really it is so she doesn't have to buy it herself.
