Wow, how sad! Too bad they're not doing anything bad enough to call the authorities on... Maybe you could get the local media to do a piece on the issue? Something about how horse rescues and sancutaries aren't always what they're cracked up to be. Tell them your story and show them the pictures. Maybe they will bite!

GREAT idea. I had to do the same thing a few years back when I took it upon myself to help out two severely neglected horses. The owner had loads of $ and was just totally ignorant. The appy gelding had ulcerated every layer of his cornea well before we got to him, and he was in such pain that he was dropping weight drastically. Wouldn't touch his food! The owner wouldn't pay for vet bills, wouldn't let us put him out of his misery (trust me, he would have preferred it to just sitting around) and I, at 15 didn't have the money for having his eye removed.

We contacted a local paper who took down a bunch of info and went out to photograph him. They were doing a "human interest" piece. Too bad they never printed it . We did raise about half of the $1000 at a garage sale, but the owner wouldn't help us out.

It's also a "sanctuary" so some of the horses weren't abused prior to them coming there. But yes, they do ride the rescues. My friend Cessna trained this beautiful little gelding named Saber and he was perfect so they wanted to adopt him...Safe Haven's response..."NO, we need him for lessons."

I'm not sure if its a not knowing better or not caring. The owner, Linda, used to be a vet tech, but it's spiralled out of control. At least the skinny horses have blankets. They have pasture ornaments as well, but like I said earlier, they have no distinct way of saying if they rideable or not for all the volunteers that go out.

I used to go out there before we bought my horse and I didn't remember it as being this bad. Back then everyone worked together to fix the fences...we all tried to groom most of the horses and treat the rainrot. I'm just so shocked from when I went out there!

Would calling animal control help?

Sammy

I went to the place that I was trained at to see on a horse this place was selling, the celiing was leaking the stalls were a mess, some horses were sick, I went to the office and had a chat with what I seen and was showed the door and I wished I could of left with all the horses...To this day I can't go on the grounds.

Sorry about your day, I know the feeling.

The owner was one of my close friends from a while ago...she treated me nicely. Except she lit up right in front of me and next to their minis, whom might I add, it cannot be good for.

I was ready to spit nails when you said they ride with a curb bit. They should be ridden with the fattest egg butt snaffel you can buy - well unless they are uncontrolable, then you just have to move to a thinner snaffel.

That rain rot is totally unacceptable, as well as the fact that some of the horses being ridden appear lame. And in that first picture is that horse tied to the post by its rein (coming from the bit)??

The whole idea of a rescue is to provide a safe and happy home for these horses while they recover from their injustices. I think something needs to change there BIG time - have you been able to contact the owner? Why has the placed changed so much since you were there last?
I don't know why everything went wrong.I suppose they might be short of manpower because their lead volunteers all quit when I did. They need a vet out there to check on these horses. None of them appeared lame when I watched the lessons, but the curbs bits made me hurt really bad.

They're tie posts is more of 4 poles with 3 poles connecting them. It's really low and if the horse spooks they can run probably 6 feet sideways aor arround the pole it they're at the end.

Oh dear
I just read all your responses to our replies. I'm not sure what you could do really - calling animal control MIGHT help...what would help more is getting exposure on the place so some people interested in adopting might come forward, but then if the owner isn't willing to let go of some of these horses then that might not help either...
Sounds SO much like the place I had mentioned in my frist post, I'm sure there have been many reports over the years on that place - but its still running, although the man is always willing to sell any horse, as he is a horse dealer.

Perhaps animal control could talk to her and it might scare her into selling some of them?
