Plenty of organizations are in their propationary period of not for profit status. They can claim at that time that they are not for profit since they have to follow the guidelines as if they had been given full status BUT they would still have paperwork to back that up. I checked and searched through guidestar. I tried everything. I can not find this rescue's name listed nor are there any rescues of any name in Fort white. I did find Healing Paws, Inc which I was on the board for and they are still probationary. This woman is a FRAUD! |

| Senior Member+ | There are a couple of different 501 catagories that are not for profit status... IF an organization advertises itself as Non or not-for profit, under federal laws they MUST be a 501 a, b or c corp!!! IF they are not reg'd with the IRS as a 501 corp and do not have a board of directors they can NOT legally be called NON or NOT for profit! To do so is false advertising and may make them liable under federal rackateering laws! That may be another angle to look at with this woman. You go get her Spy! I just go GRRRRRRRRRRRRR when people CALL themselves 'rescue' organizations when the animals there are losing condition!!!!!!!!!

Oh man....Come on sass greta, thank you so much for doing that search. I tried as well. came up empty handed. I thought that site only listed those orgs that wanted to be listed...hmmm. So, my gut was right: FRAUD!!! I called the Colombia County Sherriff's Dept. The deputy put me in touch with the Ag Dept, they were already closed when i tried to call, so first thing in the am, I will be calling. The officer actually knew exactly who i was talking about too. Go figure. Apparently, there are pending charges on her for the whole coggins thing. Someone else turned her in as well for it. So, I have that leg to stand on too. I have written down all of ya'll's suggestions, so i have my notes when i talk to them on phone.

WHere I am there is no required cert or reg to run a rescue. This is actually a good thing in the big picture. because if there was there wouldn't be enough rescue places. We also do not permit a non for profit rescue to make a profit. However, lets say a horse was brought in 600 pounds under weight, needed major care on feet and worming and skin and coat. These costs add up fast (as we all know). The owner of the operation can adopt that animal or anyother animal out at a cost to cover those costs. Lets say that same horse passed. The wonwer can recover financially by upping the adoptioon costs of others. If this wasn't permitted rescue places wouldn't exist because they would all lose out financially. The owner can also earn a salery. Running an place like that takes LOTS of time. Time has a value. I dont know if there is a max amount the person can earn personally. They need to pay a staff too. These are all costs. Most rescue places you will go to you will find under weight , malnutrioned, bad feet, not wormed, etc horses. They are at the rescue for a reason. They were taken by the courts or surendered by owners for neglect. Coggins isn't necessary unless crossing state lines in most states. However, I personally find it irresposible to not have it. The NO hay is conceerning being that they are in all sand paddocks. Being that she isnt registered anywhere as a rescue she most likely isn't getting horses placed by the courts. She might be one that goes to auction houses and such places and gets these animals for minimum cost and gives them any mimimal care to "adopt" them out. As a rescue that adopts animals she is required by ALL state laws to take that animal back if things between the apotive home and the horses. If she is selling them she is NOT really a rescue center. But more a trader. Rescue places do not adopt horses out without follow up. As adoptive home does not legally own the horse until a stated time of being in posession as stipulated by contract. A better name would be foster home. This is in my state anyway. I know laws and guidelines are differant all over. If I were you I would stay on it with an open mind. When Animal Control or the Agriculture Dept investigates go with them. Sing your name on any complaint. It's frustrating as anything when someone wants to report such things annonymosly. That leaves little recourse in determining what was really seen because there is no name on the file to ask about what was seen. Also, people being investigated will take the issue more seriously. Good luck and please keep me informed on whats up with it. |
