| Senior Member | NoseBand/Standing Martingale?
I had someone suggest that I use a standing martingale connect or part of a rope noseband with knots onver the nose, so that rather than just being restrined, which, according to them, dosn't really teach them anything, but when they fling their head up with the knotted noseband, it kinda gives a smal bit of "bite" so that they don't want to raise their head past the level you want it. I'm a little...unsure of this. I really don't like using pain to train a horse... Anyone else agree with this? |

I wouldn't do it...Why does your horse fling your head? What are you doing when they do it? Personally, I would NEVER use anything to keep a horse from flinging it's head... Have you checked for pain? Saddle fit? Thank you for really looking at it and going wait, should I dothis? and asking.. Your horse will thank you. |

Proper riding and engagement is better than a knotted noseband. BUT... I do not see anything evil in using a standing martingale (standard variety). Used properly, they can keep a head-tosser from being dangerous to their rider. A standing martingale should NEVER be adjusted so tight it keeps them from raising "their head past the level you want it". That is what good riding is for. If you must have a martingale for this purpose, a running martingale is more appropriate.

I've had a whole topic on using matingales of any kind on Feather, this was resolved, and IF I use one, I know how to adjust it properly. I'm not looking to start a repeat thread. But just to calm your worries, we had her adjusted, her teetha are fine, does this in any saddle or no saddle, ect. I just thought it was an odd idea... and I wanted to see what others have to say. |
