Post Non-Pregnet Mare Dripping Milk?

Daisy has been dripping milk. She had a foal a year ago. There is no way that she is pregnet!

She could be in season...She doesn't really show much when she is in season.

Any ideas here?

(She gets her coggins tonight so I will prob ask)

my initial thought is psuedopregnancy. could also just be that she hasnt dried off all the way from her last foal yet.

My friend's horse did this once. She got all whacked out because she thought she might be pregnant being she just bought her lol.
She talked to the vet about it and he checked her out said she was absolutely fine and not pregnant. He said basically that her body just got a little over excited about being in season.

Cool

One of my mares began making a thin milk when she was only 2. We did not breed her until she was 12. The only problem we had with it was that about a week before foaling she began to drip and lost almost all of the colostrum. The foal was given colostrum, antibodies and platelets through an I.V. My mare is now 17 and is still holding milk. My vet said not to worry about it. Some mares do this (hormone thing) and it will not affect them. To prove this, my mare won the Little Britches World championships in barrels and poles with my young niece last year. I wouldn't worry about it until you breed her again. Watch to see how much she loses before foaling.

I think it was because she was coming in season...because she is daydreaming about hot Paint studs now

I had to think back though to remember when the shetland stud was gelded (he he...a shetland breeding a giant 15.3 mare....riiiiight!)

Thanks

Rachel

Funny I read this post the day after a friend showed me her mare still produced milk even though her one and only baby is almost 2. We actually were able to "milk" her, I had to laugh because I had never milked a cow, but here I was milking a horse. We were not concerned about preganancy as there are no stallions in the "hood".

My horse did the exact same thing. She had an edema (swelling) on her underbelly. I called the vet and he told me to check for milk. Sure enough, she had milk! He said it could be hormonal or it could happen from eating alfalfa.
