i do admit having those fantasies when i was younger about my parents buying me a horse, but honestly i think it turned out much better after i leased and took lessons for many years, to the point where i knew what i could handle and what i was looking for. and when i reached that point i got the support of my parents because i was really ready.

Am I the only one wondering why this horse, if he was so unpredictable, was being used as a schooling horse?

That's sad...nothing but heartache can come from that decision. It's too bad they didn't ask for advice/assistance from knowledgable people.

I find it even more annoying when HORSEY parents try to get their NON-HORSEY kids involved with the animals. A dear (clueless) friend of mine enjoyed riding in her early teens and now tries to force her ten year old into enjoying horses. The kid has NO interest in horses, acts loud and stupid around them in an attempt to get them to run (thinks they are boring just standing around) and the whole time her mother is just beaming "ooh, she's showing an interest!" Meanwhile I'm trying to keep my sanity, ha ha ha, and keep the kid out of harm's way. The rule around here is if you want to ride you have to help catch, groom and tack up and untack and groom again after the ride plus help carry the tack back to the house...even a ten year old can brush a horse and learn to pick hooves out on a safe horse...this kid only wants to ride and gets cranky when it's not happening. It's simply too stressful and no fun at all for me when she's around. I finally told my friend that her kid is not mature enough to be safe around the horses and I would prefer she not bring her when we'd be in the pasture. Maybe when she's older...but I doubt it, I think this kid is beyond hope...spoiled.

I find that happens a lot with lesson horses, the kid starts riding one horse and absolutely loves him, parents bu them despite the fact he's 30 and three legged lame

ack sorry REALLY OLD

Sure, it can become a trainwreck.... but it's not a given..... in every situation. That one decision by my parents shaped my entire life, and made me who I am. I know it sounds a touch dramatic, but it's absolutely true. And I thank the heavens they did.
Thats exactly how i feel. Yeah i jumped into a horse i wasn't ready for, drama went down with the crazy trainer, moved barns, horse went downhill because of trainer and i had to sell her. Looking back at the pictures of her, her confirmation was horrbile as well.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have horsey parents, but there are plenty of people out there (like you hopefully) who will help her and teach her everything she needs to know.
