Don't feel embarassed at all...you have no need to be!

First of all, can you have an instructor or someone experienced to lunge you so you can concentrate on working without stirrups while holding the pommel of the saddle so you don't have to worry about controlling the horse? That would be the BEST way to learn, so that you aren't balancing on the horses mouth, or directing him...you can just work on gaining an independant seat.

Work without stirrups is HARD work! But it really does help you to find your seat and to use it more...especially rising to the trot without stirrups! But it will strengthen you so much that when you do get your stirrups back, you won't be pushing up off of them, but will instead be using the correct muscles to support yourself properly.

Is you horse really sensitive to the leg? Sounds like he/she might be...do you cross your stirrups over when you work w/o stirrups so they aren't banging against the horses sides? You may also be gripping with your legs, and unknowingly squeezing the horses sides, causing him/her to go faster.

You need to relax through your hips and let your legs just hang.

Lessons on the lunge will improve you out of sight!

You're problem is that you're relying on your legs to balance yourself. Can you get some lunge lessons without stirrups it might work better for you. Or if you can ride bareback (bareback is easier than no stirrup work).

If you can take a lunge lesson, you need to do no stirrup and no reins. Reason being, if you are gripping with your legs now and work through that, you're likely to start balancing with your hands instead.

Starting no stirrup work can be scary, but it will really improve you as a rider if you learn to do it correctly. If you learn to do it incorrectly, it will worsen you as a rider.

So you're just slipping your feet out of the stirrups? That's part of your problem. The stirrups are left to bang around on the horse's sides. Couple that with the fact that you're probably gripping to balance, of course the horse's are taking off. Stirrups should always be completely removed or crossed over the pommel. That is how they would ask you to do it in competition as well, so that's the way it should be practiced. It's pretty dangerous to just leave them flapping for various reasons.

Can you post the trot bareback? Are you trying to post without stirrups? Or are you just trying to sit? Can you effectively sit the trot with stirrups?

If they do not specify (iow, say 'drop your irons'), then it's perfectly acceptable to go ahead and cross them over.

When you post with stirrups, is your weight in your stirrups? Or rather I should say, are you supporting the weight of your body when you rise with your feet?
