No Salt? UPDATE************

my horse does not lick from the salt lick..there are 4 acssecable[sp.] salt licks in her paddock and she never licks from them. also we have tryed lick its in the stall and even hand feeding them to see if she would take a lick...but nothing.
is this healthy..
can she get salt from somewhere else.
and she is not a metal licker or wood chewer.

If you give feed, it has salt in it. Some horses will also eat dirt or clay that has salt in it.
She may be doing it when you are not looking. You can give electolytes in the feed if you are worried about it.
they also make mineralized salt/suplement blocks that some picky horses are more attracted to licking.

Sometimes the horses don't like the blocks. I switched mine from a block to loose salt and loose mineral. They eat more mineral than salt, put out about a cup/horse and that lasts 1-3 weeks--depending on what they want that time of year.

Many horses don't like the blocks because they are rough/hard, designed for rough cow tongues, not smooth horse tongues. Loose salts and minerals area much kinder to the horse.

You dont have to have a Likit holder to make use of the filler "cakes" designed for them. Ive set Electrolyte mini-likits in both slide-in and shoeshaped holders. The bigger likits have a tube in the middle some may find disconcerting. Once the horses discovered the likits, they really seem to like it. An electrolyte 'flavor' likit is another option for you.

You can put a small feeder pan in the corner were she eats on the floor. They usually don't p.oo in that corner so it's not too hard for the stall cleaner to clean around.

Or if you have an extra bucket hook, you could hang a bucket and put the loose stuff in there.

only comes in to eat and goes back out.
they stay in when it is rainy..
or winter/cold.
so idk.

I think that would be ok, as long as she's in regularly. She'll figure out where it is, and take want she needs.
