| Senior Member+ | No no...it's back...news on blister...***K-state results in....post 50
same thing last year.....just catching it early so far. Anemic, immature bloodcells, high platelets, low RBC's. OK on most everything else CBC wise. Got new blood to run internal organ panels. But what I thought was him being ran off from other horses, turns out to be his body attacking itself. basically, the thing was, he has been now holding a BCS of 4.5. SLIGHTLY ribby, not much, but hips and back were wasting a bit. Eating plenty of his feed, free choice hay. However I found out that he not only eats his feed, he eats a few pounds of the other horses feed INCLUDING Equine Senior and Purina Ration balancer. For what I've been told he chases off the others and eats.....he should NOT be at a 4.5. Movement wise, he seems fine. He wants to GO GO GO and I hold him back from doing it. now I feel rotten for working him. I'll know more tomorrow. I can't do this again.....I can't..........

My current vet I work with, not an equine vet, thinks he may have been autoimmuned his whole life after she found out about his blisters as a baby. Just after the PF, his body has succumbed to it more-so. I've got steroids now on hand, waiting for his internal functions to come back....and doubling his feed starting tonight as well as adding Red cell to his dinners to counter the anemia. if I can control it....fine! But I hope he doesn't blow up again.....OMG that almost killed him last time.....

Is it possible that he's od'ing on a mineral or vitamin since he's eating the other horse's feed in addition to his own? (Just looking for the simplist explination first.) Have you ever had him scoped for ulcers? |

I asked on ulcers....said WBCs would be slightly elevated. They are low normal. The vet I spoke to (equine out of Ft worth) said unlikely to be nutritionally related unless he's lacking iron. Waiting to hear more after we get the internal function profile. But with platelets high, RBC's low and immature, he said immediately Autoimmune. TOTALLY different vet to his normal one as well....so this vet had zero history until after he made a quick guesstimate diagnosis based on the CBC. Either catching it as it starts, or he's going to be "off" the rest of his life after he found out his history....... Could also be Cancer......that was thrown out, however WBC's weren't affected nor the rest of his Diff affected other than RBC's. he isn't JUST anemic. Lots of immature RBC's. ulcers won't cause that.

Michelle- I'm so sorry. What horrible news I hope you and your vet can control this...

Certain minerals interfere with iron absorption and could show the same things (imo, but I'm obviously not a vet). I don't think white cells would have to be high with ulcers? (Though again, I'm not a vet.) Both would explain the other issues as well. |

Dont panic until you need to. You might be able to just work with it. I'll keep my fingers crossed and say a prayer for Blister and your stress levels. Is it possible to seperate him during feeding so he doesn't eat the other horses' food? |
