No more beet pulp!

So, I was at the feed store today getting my monthly supply, and I though it would be a good idea to start stocking up on winter essentials, since who knows when we are going to get a decent load of hay in. I gave the nice lady behind the counter my list, and on that list was 4 bags of beet pulp pellets. She told me all she had were the shreds, that the pellets had been discontinued nationwide.

I asked why, and she said they are being used for other things, such as ethanol, and various other products, so they were pulled off the shelves at her place and all over our county. She didnt know where I could get them, she said nobody has them. She was also told that it would be more than a year before they were back in the marketplace.

This makes me so mad. A 40# bag of shreds costs just as much as a 50# bag of pellets. The shreds take up 3 times as much room to store, are dusty, and IMHO are a pain to use. I have to refill my big barrels 3 times as often, and find a place to store the unopened bags, which arent even dust-tight (I keep my food in the house). I, however, am going to have to stock up big time on them, because who knows how long before TPTB discover that people who are using them for horse feed, because of the shortage of hay, jack up the prices or discover "other" uses for BP. We need a big load of hay to fall from the sky (in the form of rain)

The good thing about shredded beet pulp, is that mice and rats don't eat it! I can store unopened bags on the floor of my feed shed, and the mice and rats won't even bother it, but let me sit a bag of feed on the floor, and it will have a hole in it by morning....I keep all my feed in air tight barrels ..... I sure hope they don't keep raising the prices of feed, it's getting rediculous! Cathy

I wish I could say prices would stay low... Its so nice to see farmers finally getting some money for their crops, but I am not sure in the long run it will even help them (us). WIth feed doubling... and expected to go much higher as this years crops are sold to ethanol plants - both corn and beans are being made into fuel for cars instead of fuel for our animals... Grain producers are goign to have to match the prices if they want any - wheat has even gone up because hay is so limited that people are using wheat to feed.

No corn.... no hay.... I am honestly afraid of what next spring will bring. Most of the hay fields here have been tilled up and corn planted in its place.

I have a feeling its going to get much worse before it gets better. It will have to give at some point... right?

I hope I am wrong...I really do, but I am preparing as best I can because I think its going to be a really tough few years.

It's true about the shortages and commodities markets going NUTS! I'm a feed dealer and the letter we got this week explained the serious price increases we rec'd. As with any market situation (think stock market) it is possibly an over-reaction which may or may not correct itself..., but unlike the stock market, which is mostly paper gains & losses - it takes awhile to replant/grow and hope for great weather for livestock feed.

One other thing that I hope comes out of this crisis is for people to stop and think about the over-population of equines in the USA.

Well my feed store still had four bags today and I bought all four. No one said anything about not being able to get any more.
