Unhappy Nipping..

My horse has recently gotten into the habit of nipping. My friend's mom and I have been trying to get him to stop, but nothing has worked. Any ideas on how we can get him to stop nipping?

When my colt nipped at me, I just took my fingers and pushed them into the roof of his mouth for just a few seconds. Seems to work, just be careful not to get bit.

Well, my mare got into nipping a while back. Every time that she'd nip me, I'd pop her neck (because i didn't want to make her head shy) and say "NO!" loudly and firmly. Well, that didn't really work, so I'd give her a punch in the nose. Worked better, but still not great. So I tried using a whip. Nope. One day she actually took a bit out of me so I bit her back on the nose. Hard eek! She squealed and looked at me like I was crazy, but she has never tried it again, lol! I'm not really recommending that, but that ended up working for me

If it comes to that I'll try it, it did work on my friend's dog.. eek! Thank you for the suggestions, you don't know how greatful I am. I really love him, but if he was to acctually take a bite out of me, my mom would sell him and I would have no say. Thanks again!

We've had quite a few nippy ponies at our barn and what worked with them was taking a spray bottle and squirting lemon juice into their mouths when they went in for a chomp.

That sounds like it works well! I will try that if he keeps it up.. I'm kinda afraid that he's gonna nip some little kid at the 4-H fair this year, which would be absolutely horrible, so I'm doing everything in my power to get him to stop.

Question

The lemon juice won't hurt the horses? Make them sick or anything? My gelding just recently started nipping and I have tried almost everything (except that). If it won't hurt him, that is what I will try next. pony

IMO, when a horse nips at you, he is trying to bite and hurt you. I, myself, use the 3 second rule. When any horse displays aggression towards me like that, I make a big display towards him, raising my voice slightly and deeply, I *tell him off* and yes, I will smack the mouth. I make him scared for his life. Now, if you sit back and think about it, 3 seconds isn't long adn I certainly won't cause any lasting physical damage, it's what I am making him think mentally that is important here. wink
