The oral history of the Nez Perce includes a story about the " ghost wind" stallions who were said to be fewspot horses off a russian ship. DNA Testing on the most foundation bred appaloosas indicate a clooser DNA tie to russina horses (in particular the Altai) then with modern QH/Tb types. DNA testing is still ongoing and the full report is not yet available.

Similarly, my Anglo Arabian gelding (TB dam, Arab sire) looks a LOT more like the original Arabians being bred in the middle east historically than ANY of the Arabs on today's market, lol.

I see what you are saying. I've looked at some pictures of the older Arabians (like Mesouad and Nazeer) and yes they are very different from the more modern Arabians of today in a lot of ways.

Beautiful story and I loved the song. I'd love to see some pictures of the Ghost Wind stallions. What a loss that they are nearly gone.

The Nez Perce tribe not only wanted to bring the Appaloosa back to a taller more athletic horse, they wanted to bring the reputation of being fine horse breeders back to the tribe and create horse that would be associated with the tribe by naming it the Nez Perce Horse. As Sandra A-1 mentioned in a previous post, they also want make breeding and horse related activities (like trail riding) a viable living for members of the tribe. They are teaching the kids how to care for and breed horses. Also, even though most people are breeding for spots, the Registry handbook doesn't mention horses having spots or striped hooves or mottled skin like the Appaloosa. They are more interested in athleticism and good temperment. One of my horses is a solid bay and is a beauty!

Wow, I have never read the story of the Ghost Wind Stallions. I is beautiful. It isn't clear in the story though what exactly makes a horse a Ghost Wind Stallion. Are they spotted horses out of solid horses or leopard all over or is it a spiritual thing? Does anyone know? It is such an interesting idea.

History of the Spotted Horse

Quote:
The results, according to the story, were the beginning of the Nez Perce Appaloosa. The story tells that these stallions had silvery white bodies with black marks on their faces and legs and speckles on their muzzles. These stallions were said to have powerful medicine and were known as the Ghost Wind Stallions.
indicates black based few spot horses.

Here is a picture of my 3 year old Nez Perce Horse stallion Talohin. He is an absolute sweetie. Very intelligent and curious, but a joy to handle. My other 2 are one and a half years old and nine months. They are very fuzzy right now with their winter coats. This picture was taken last summer.
