Newbie from Illinois

Hey all,
I am new here and thought I would introduce myself. I am a 30 yr. old married mother of 3 kids aged 14,12,&8. I also have 2 birds, 2 cats and 1 horse we just bought today! I am so new to horses, I just learned how to clean out the stalls in the barn today too, and let me tell ya.... I have never worked so hard in my life!! I could feel it all the way home. LOL. My cousin-in-law is going to teach us everything she knows as her and her hubby show appaloosa's and also breed them. I have spent days surfing the internet for any and all info I can find on general horse care and terminology but am having trouble locating any real good useful info. Any good links? We decided to get into the horse world as therapy at first ( I have been battling Lymphoma for the last 4 1/2 months now)and are finding ourselves hooked already. We have a lot to learn but are looking forward to it. Our horse is an 18 year old quarter horse that has been broke to death and she is very easy going and forgiving which is just what we were looking for. I would appreciate any links or info any of you might have as I just don't know where to begin. I am glad I found this site as I have spent some time just lurking through some of the threads and there is some good info here. I look forward to settling in here.

Welcome. You made a good choice for a first horse. Generally speaking the older mature horse will take good care of beginner riders. I do volunteer work for a Theraputic Riding Association and all the horses are older. They try very hard to not put a foot wrong and they are good teachers. You will find your horse will benefit you both emotionally and physically. Good Luck and hope to see you around here lots.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome. We were told she would be the best thing to start with for the very same reasons you have listed. She was a wee bit skiddish yesterday but was warm towards us. She had been out in the pasture for a length of time and I don't think she much cared for the stall she was in. When she was turned out into the arena, she ran and was very active then. She is just so BIG!!! I have to get over that initial "uneasiness" I have around her. I really enjoyed meeting her though and look forward to seeing her every weekend. Any advice on the best way to clean a saddle?? It has about a hundred layers of dust and grime on it and I hve no clue how to treat it or whatever I am s'posed to do to it. LOL. Thanks!

You can get a good saddle cleaner/conditioner at any tack store. It takes lots of elbow grease sometimes.

Don't be nervous around your horse. They will pick up on it. You have to be aware but try not to be nervous. The more you interact with the horse on the ground the sooner they will learn tht they can trust you and that will carry forward when mounted.
