| Senior Member+ | New West Nile vaccine
I know somebody posted on this, but of course I can't seem to find it when I want it LOL This was sent by the chair of TWHBEA's breeders committee I thought it was interesting PreveNile is a vaccine like no other. It uses cutting-edge chimera technology to generate a powerful immune response in your horse. Last year I gave a presentation to the Ex. Com. on Chimeras and how they have been found in the equine world. (Quarter Horse Journal-January issue) In the middle of the year I circulated an article about how the research in chimeras was leading to fantastic scientific discoveries in human cancer treatments as well as in animal vaccines. Here is an advertisement for PreveNile. I only copied the part explaining what a chimera vaccine is but thought it was interesting enough to share with all of you. If you would like copies of the articles I have on human chimeras and equine chimeras let me know and I can forward them to you. Kathy Zeis What Is a Chimera Vaccine? A chimera vaccine is created by combining two similar viruses into one. In the development of PreveNile™, a WN-YF chimera vaccine, the structural genes of the attenuated human yellow fever (YF-17D) vaccine were replaced with the structural genes of the West Nile virus. The result is a WN-YF chimera vaccine that expresses the PreMembrane and Envelope proteins of WNV that stimulate a protective immune response in the horse. PreveNile is the first and only equine vaccine that uses chimera technology. The combination of two things – like wings of a bird and the body of a horse – is a visual definition of chimera. PreveNile is a combination of two similar flaviviruses. Because they are so similar, they help your horse generate a very powerful immune response. PreveNile stimulates two types of immunity (humoral & cell-mediated) for strong, long-lasting protection with a single dose. It’s important to note that both components of the WN-YF chimera vaccine have been modified so they cannot produce the actual disease.

This vaccine requires a single injection to produce immunity, rather than an initial 2 injection series. Good immunity is established by 28 days post-vaccination. Unfortunately, it's only available as a single-antigen vaccine and until it's more widely used there will still be some questions as to the actual safety (adverse reaction wise) of the vaccine--it's always that way with any new product because of the great variation in the "general public" as compared to controlled field studies. Why PreveNile? - Prevenile™ Protect your horse against West Nile Virus

I was interested in the genetic engineering. I tend to be a little wary of that especially after having been married to an engineer LMAO
