I would like to point out that you cannot actually count on the support of the representative you mention as a LOT of horseback riders feel that at the present time horse slaughter is a necessary evil and would NOT back a bill to ban it.

Its great that you are taking an interest in something such as this but i have a few suggestions.
horse slaughter is currently necessary because of overbreeding, backyard breeding and irresponsible horse ownership. Before any bill to ban it is proposed the problems making it necessary must be as close as possible to being eradicated.
in order to acheive this you need to
#1 stop wasting time trying to be active against the horse slaughter industry itself - that helps no-one. If you must seek changes seek to get better regulation and inspection, NOT an outright ban.
#2 shift your focus to EDUCATION, educate people as to what goes into horse ownership and how to breed responsibly in order to try and eleviate the problems necessitating horse slaughter at the current time. This also drives up the price of horses making it less likely the kill buyers will be able to afford to buy them without mosing money.
#3 be active in trying to provide alternative solutions to the overpopulation problem. This means raising money for shelters, rescues, etc etc that will rehome some of the unwanted horses.

Once you have acheived all of the above on a national scale THEN you can try to get slaughter banned outright. If there is no longer an overpopulation problem then ALL horse lovers would be glad to see the end of horse slaughter. At the moment it is a very grey area.

It is nice to see that you care about horses. However

Without horse slaughter there will be more horse's
dying a slow and pitiful death because there are not enough homes for them. I am talking about the lame, the old and the horse that is just not suitable or safe to ride. Horses are expensive to properly care for and without slaughter many would sit out of site and die slowly due to neglect.

So I urge you to really think this through before you push for this type of ban.

Where are all those unwanted animals to go? There are already thousands of blm horses standing around in pens because of a lack of suitable homes. These animals cost tax payers alot of money.

Not many of us would opt to spend our hard earned money on a horse that cannot fulfil its purpose.

I feel that humane slaughter is a good thing for the horse industry. Some blame the backyard breeder and ohter's for creating a glut of horses. This may be true. But this has also created a situation in which those of us that cannot pay thousands for a horse can buy one at a reasonable price.

Rather than rally to end horse slaughter I feel it would be a good cause to work toward making sure the slaughter facilties do the job in a humane manner.

Just a thought from a fellow horse lover
