Smile New member with a new horse

Hi everyone.

I'm Lisa, and I just became the owner of a 3-week old registered Quarter Horse filly! I have spent years and years around horses, and used to work in a riding academy in exchange for lessons. I would also work with the young or green horses and get them ready for use in lessons. I've ridden mostly english, and although I have ridden western too, english is definitely my preferred style.

My older sister owns a Bashkir Curly Horse (pony) and last year she changed his boarding stable. I have been going out with her to ride a lot lately, but the horse I was riding up until a month ago (QH mare) was just bred, and in case she loses the foal (she's a bit of a problem breeder) her owner, who is also the owner of the stable, doesn't want me riding her - completely understandable. Instead she said I could use any of her other horses (well broke TB X with heaves, broke 21 yr old appy stallion, or a 2 year old Shetland pony). I tried the first 2 but they're just old push button horses, and I didn't want to work them too hard cause they're getting up there in age. So then I started working with Checkers, the Shetland. In four sessions, he went from pushy, rude, never been ridden, to well behaved on the ground, respecting of my space, will stand for saddle and bridle, walks, trots, canters (both leads), backs, stops, walks over ground poles, baths, trails (fine with cars, water, birds, walking over cans, etc), and I even took him over a super low x-rail. He also goes bareback with just a halter and a lead rope, and I can open gates while on him. In 4 sessions! Although I can't take all the credit as he is incredibly smart and willing to learn. But he is going to make some kid an amazing do-anything pony.

Anyways! The woman that owns the stable told me that she was so impressed with how far I'd progressed his training in such a short time, that she wants me to work with 5 other horses she owns that need to be broken, and in exchange she'd give me a filly that was just born this year! So obviously, I agreed I get her board-free for the first year, and half-board after that, and I'm responsible for farrier, deworming, vaccines, etc. I'm in uni for another 2 years till I get my degree (BSc in Agriculture, specializing in Animal Sciences) so I wouldn't have been able to afford my own horse until this amazing opportunity was presented to me! So needless to say, I'm extremely excited!

Now I just need to think of a name for her, I like Stella/Stellar, and Roxy, but I don't know which I like better! And I don't want to choose just yet in case I think of something better! She's chestnut with no leg markings, and a stripe right down the middle of her face. She's going to be a BIG girl. I'm going to ride and train her english, although she is from reining and barrel lines. I've just really got no interest in riding western, and she's athletic enough that she'll be good at anything.

Here she is!

This is her mom

and her dad

Let me know what you think!
