Just kidding (well a little). Ranitidine seems to be one of the easiest ways to determine if a horse has ulcers without sinking a lot of money into treatment, scoping (which is nowhere near 100% anyway), etc...

I'm thinking the ranitidine has to be given every 8 hours? But I might be wrong on that. If she's fed twice a day, then that would only leave you twice that you might have to go out and give it yourself? I believe you should be able to see a difference in a week at most from what I remember. (Keep in mind I've never actually used this method personally, just read other's results.)
I know, I definitely lucked out with this place There are closer places, but they only had stalls available. That's all Southern California is LOL.

I looked it up on Smartpak after I posted-- when you said "administered," that made my brain think injected or given like a wormer. Feeding is easy! They are fed 3x a day, but I don't know what the times are. I know she's always happily munching away on her dinner by 5:30 though.

The issue would be though that it is Rx only. I don't think I could get a vet to just write me an Rx without having seen her for the issue I guess I could call the vet who did the PPE for me and ask.

Oh, oops! You can get human ranitidine otc generic. Go to Sam's (or whatever kind of place like that you have 'out there') and buy it in bulk. I'm not sure of the doseage off the top of my head, but you should be able to describe what you're wanting to do to your vet and get a doseage from him. Tell him you're not looking to 'treat' ulcers just supress symptoms.

Seems to me that over the night would be the most difficult time as far as dosing with it. And I'm not sure how much it woudl affect results if it wasn't given 'exactly' every 8 hours.

Oh cool! Much better LOL. I'll go get some then, and put in a call to my old vet and see if they can give me a recommended dosage.

There is obviously a HUGE variance in dosage!

Wonder if it would be worth it to post a thread on here specifically asking about the dosage? Maybe someone else has used it.

I'll ask the vet clinic when I talk to them tomorrow. I don't think there's any way we could do it every 8 hours without me doing at least two feedings.

Shannon when you call around ask for the products by name

Purina is Enrich32 for grass base or Enrich12 for alfalfa base

LMF is Super Supplement G for grass or A for alfalfa

Triple Crowns is TC30% for Grass or TC12% for alfalfa

Oh I know Peggy. I was calling around mainly trying to find the TC 12% and some would tell me they had the 30%. If they carried LMF I asked if they had the Super Supplement. Same for the Purina...I just didn't remember the specific name when I posted that LOL.

Oh boy, isn't that true LOL. Not a single one has known what a "ration balancer" was-- I asked a couple, if after they said they didn't carry any of the RBs I was asking about, if they carried any other RBs. The reaction was always, "huh?"

Not anymore. That was just for transitioning her to the new barn, since she was on mostly timothy at her old home. She's on a mix of mostly alfalfa and oat, with a little orchard I believe.

ok, i know, i know, this is mumbo jumbo..

but I'd run a hair (now saliva) analysis on her. Cruz's anxiety and bad attitude is greatly diminished. My only regret is not doing it sooner. I don't get it, I don't know how it works, I don't want to know how it works, but it did.

Does take 6 weeks to get results back though. In the mean time I'd do exactly what you're doing and try the Ranitidine (I actually tried that with Cruz too).

Was she getting alfalfa before? Is it the same food? If not, what's the protein before compared to the protein now? I have had a couple go bat-sh!t coocoo on alfalfa and/or higher protein.
